New Low For Boston Pops 4'th of July Esplanade Concert 0n Ch. 4

It what can only be an appeal to individuals who think "Pops"
is term of endearment of one's father or a type of carbonated beverage it was noted in The Boston Globe that Dr. Phil and his wife will host the nationally televised broadcast of The Boston Pops Esplande Concert on July 4th.

This has to be a new low for the televised 4th of July Boston Pops Concert which under the direction of Keith Lockart has lost much of the distinction it once held under Arthur Fiedler and John Williams. In an attempt to attract a young audience the Boston Pops has traded on its tradition and come up empty handed with talent of limited ability to perform to the standard one would expect from the Boston Symphony's Pops Esplande Orchestra. The traditional 1812 Overture has even been cut to give more time and space to talent that would not have made week one of American Idol.

A Capitol Fourth with Eric Kunzel conducting the National Symphony Orchestra which is broadcast on most PBS stations at the same time has become a much better way to spend two hours than to watch the once cultivated and still fun Boston Pops July 4th concert fall to an MTV standard.

The Boston Globe also reported in the same article that the Boston Pops cannot even secure at this late date name talent to perform. James Taylor had be in negotiations but the organizers of the Pops Concert were so indecisive that he signed on for another concert.
And now, we are left with Dr. Phil. What a disgrace!

Well, here's to a PBS Capitol Fourth.

A close friend said tonight "there's a rumor that the Boston Pops won't be on the Esplanade this year because of terrorism." I said after reading this Casablance "What's worse than the Pops not performing on the Esplanade? DR. PHIL HOSTING. Eeeeek....even a d.j. from Mars or from Kansas would be more appealing..
Dr. Phil??? eccch

Ch 4 reported at 11 tonight that Steve Tyler [ne. Steve Taliaricco of Marshfield] will be playing with the Pops at the Esplande. Love Arrowsmith but not sure that this is the venue for a classical 4th of July Esplande concert.
The concert may have to move next year because they are going to do some road and bridge work which might close Storrow Drive.

But Dr. Phil is enough for me NOT to turn on Ch. 4 but Ch. 2 WGBH to watch "A Capitol Fourth" instead.

The show was a classy presentation when it was presented to a national audience via A&E. CBS took the thing and ruined it. I don't plan to watch this year.

Awful.

First of all, It's Aerosmith, not "Arrowsmith."
Second of all a "rumor" is an unconfirmed item, much like gossip, not news, and therefore, irrelevant. And, in this case, such a rumor as "no Pops because of Terrorism" is just not believable. Sorry, I need more than a "rumor" to buy that one.
Thid, what in the world is wrong with Dr. Phil hosting the Pops? I believe that CBS owns the rights to Dr. Phil, and so this is not any different than having Letterman host the Oscars.

Ok, bad example (LOL), but you see my point. Also, will WBZ, oops, I mean, "CBS 4" be producing it again this year? Either way, it's a CBS property, so the fact that a CBS celeb would be host neither bothers me nor does it suprise me.

As for Steven Tyler always being involved, I can only say this, Whatever happened to Billy Joel, Sting, and Barry Manillow? You can draw your own conclusion on that one.

Dr. Phil is a shyster who has nothing to do with music.

Dr. Phil hosting this event is an act of terrorism if I've ever seen one. Where are the Homeland Security folks when you need 'em? :D
