New Morning Show on Hot 106: Big Boy's Neighborhood

Starting on July 21st, 6A-10A, Big Boys Neighborhood comes to HOT 106. Big Boy’s Neighborhood is a top-rated show in L.A. and began it’s syndication during the Fall 2007. HOT 106 is the newest affiliate for Big Boy bringing the market total to 30+ affiliates. Launching at the same time as HOT 106 is New York ’s #1 for hip – hop and R&B, HOT 97. “Big Boy’s Hip Hop Spot” will also be featured on Saturdays (7a-10a) on Hot 106.

Kerry Collins back to 92profm nights.

Big Boys Neighborhood? It will probably be better than all of the crap on the dial right now. At least they are in the right place for good guests. They get advantage points for that.

Eh, clearly a cost-cutting measure. Yet another Providence airshift lost to syndication. I have to honestly say that I've never listened to Hot for more than 2 minutes in my entire life. Oh well.

Good for Kerry I suppose if he can keep his same salary.

Hot only mattered when Stern was there. I don't think I've listened to them for two minutes either since he's been gone.

From what I hear of him on his website yo radiobigboy.com you probably won't listen more than 2 minutes in the future yo. You know what I'm sayin yo? He's got sidekicks with names like Dr Philthy, Lucious Liz who does booty calls, Tattoo, QDeezy, Luther Luffeigh, and E-Man yo. Well maybe I'll listen to hear what Dr Philthy sounds like. Is this a real show or a Wayans Brothers movie?

Actually, this IS a very good move. This board is made up of mostly angry older white males. This show is very well done for their target demo. Plus, as an earlier poster stated, "yet another cost cutting move". What's so wrong with cutting costs? CDL is almost a penny stock. The last time I checked, it was trading for around 80 cents. I predict Big Boy will increase audience share of 106.

If nothing else it's not putting Kerry Collins out of work compared to Clear Channel's cost cutting that always puts people on the street. That said,I don't know why they even tried him on that morning show except that Citadel always wanted to deny who the audience for Hot 106 really is.They constantly ran ads for people as if they were going to build an entire team but never went any further than surrounding Kerry with people who were already in the building as interns or mixers. This board is made of mainly of white males but the only ones I see as angry are the ones who bellyache about the talk shows.I will agree very few here are in Hot 106's target demo but even if the show is successful what will Citadel do with that target demo when it comes to sales?

First off, greetings one and all, I came across the board by chance and I'm very happy that I did ... OK ...

Now, I'm too through with this entire "Big Boy" situation, Emmis, and syndication for that matter! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!! Whatever really happened to inform, educate AND THEN entertain the masses. Big Boy's show is garbage and it's no better than the show they pulled (at least in NYC)--"Miss Jonez" -- UGH!!! It's these same people that have told me that I don't sound "ethnic" enough OR that I cannot "relate" to their urban audience ... sad, sad, sad ... I relate better than you think and it's not fair to professionals who can acclimate to any format and care about the listeners' half-ear. HELL-to the O!!!! With the recession is everything else going downhill? What the HE-- happened to QUALITY programming? Seriously?

Emmis Communication's efforts in the NYC "hip hop and R&B" market ... G-A-R-B-A-G-E (and, no, I am NOT an angry WHITE MALE) ... While I understand that Angie Martinez's mother is the PD at HOT 97, which is difficult to listen to anyway--even moreso now since they have some intern attempting to read news and field the hard breaks--like scratching a chalk board, they REALLY need to revamp their whole team ... cost cutting is out of control it has contributed to HORRIBLE programming forcing everyone over to SIRIUS, HD and whatever else out there ... when will it stop?!!!!! And, NO D@MN IT!!! I do not have E-Z Pass!

Frankly I just quickly went to the big boy's website and saw what I expected to see but never heard the show. I'll probably listen once but that's it and I won't be listening for the music. Frankly the people I know who listen to urban formats, be they black or white or Hispanic or whatever, for the most part are educated and don't talk like these so-called entertainers. Granted it's entertainment and not real but when are radio stations going to realize there comes a point where you reach adulthood and stop mimicing the celebrities you may be a fan of. Does everyone who listens to hip hop talk like these performers? No. The only ones who do are the adolescents and the adults who never grew up. Does everyone who listens to HJY play pool and drink beer 7 nites a week? No, but the station acts like their audience lives the music lifestyle. Again it's all for show and it's entertainment but this stuff appeals to the lowest common denominator of the format fans.

Nobody ever said Hot 106 appeals to the upper class. That's for sure. But I have to say that out of any radio station in Providence, "HOT" probably has got the clearest picture of who their audience actually is.

Kerry is not leaving the Trail. There is a spot for him at ProFM again, albiet a lower paying one.

Yes there is, but it's a "been there-done that" slot. Unless he really didn't enjoy the morning grind and welcomes going back to his old slot I think you can assume he'll be looking. Kerry is a good, serviceable CHR jock. For this market I'd stress the word "good". I never saw him as a morning jock but think at this point he shouldn't be doing nights either with the lack of importance associated with that shift in these times. Afternoon drive would be perfect but until Tony Bristol decides it's time for Davey to move on to another demo like Tanya did, Kerry isn't moving into afternoons.

Anyway now Hot has their multi person true blue urban crew and they don't even have to let them in the building.

I admit I don't think I ever listened to him on Hot in the morning, though I did listen to him on PRO-FM when he was doing nights, and it seems more him.

Maybe he looks to Coast FM to join Tad in the morning.

Almost all of the time, I rather have a local morning show . But this Kerry Dude Stunk up the joint at Hot 106. Hot 106 have not been good in The Morning, since Hot 106 Cut off Howard way too early ( Hot shutdown Howard Stern show before the end of his radio contract ). Steve Harvey would had been a better choice, but I think Big boy will do ok at Hot 106.

It's good to see everyone is forming their beliefs based on complete information.

The Big Boy morning show is one of the best in the country and has star power through guests that is difficult to reproduce at any local level. There is a reason some of the best stations are jumping to have it on air. While costs are likely one factor, it wouldn't go on top stations if it didn't have a track record of producing strong results.

Hot 106 has the biggest joke of a signal out of all the Providence stations. First of all it actually transmits out of Cumberland, and let's just say that the signal is nothing short of PATHETIC in the east end of Johnston, and the west end of Providence. If you drive along Plainfield Street from Atwood Ave. in Johnston to Providence, Killingly Street in Providence, Central Ave. in Johnston, Atwood Ave. in Johnston, and the 6/10 connector, Hot 106 does not even scan on a good car radio. At home, in the east end of Johnston, I cannot even get the station on any radio in my house, including a Radio Shack DX-375 digital portable, and Phillips CD clock radio with analog dial. All I get is interference from other stations. I don't even listen to Hot 106 that much, but the signal has always been like this. I would think that they would want to sound strong especially in the urban areas of Providence but they don't even scan in the west end. Amazingly they have done nothing about the poor signal in parts of Providence and Johnston. Maybe nobody cares to tell them because they are listening to Jam'n 94.5 or another station anyway, or maybe people have told them and Citadel just ignores them or just can't do anything about it. I was never surprised why Jam'n 94.5 always had a good amount of listeners in Rhode Island.

Jay,

It's always been that way. Their signal strength has been their achilles heel since day #1. The areas you mention just happen to be in the shadow of all of the transmitters up on Neutaconkanut Hill, which is also why they simulcast for a number of years on the other frequency (102.7 I believe) to get better coverage in the state. They've got protection issues all around them, so a power increase and stick move are out of the question (Dave Gardiner can probably back me up on that, I believe we reviewed this 2 years ago or so)
