New Non-com FM in Htfd, not really but if there was and you were the licensee...

If you could put on a new non-commercial college station station what kind of programming would you offer?

Would you use a lot of automation or try to keep it mostly live (assuming you had volunteers willing to do shows).

And last, if you were based at a college how important do you think having the station serve as a training ground for students is vs. having the highest quality programming possible (in theory those two goals are not mutually exclusive, but in practice they almost always seem to be).

Re: New Non-com FM in Htfd, not really but if there was and you were the license

I would have a format similar to WBZC in New Jersey.

Dance music from 6PM-10AM (hours may vary based on specialty shows), since that is a format hole in Hartford and we have 104.1 for the rock music that typical college stations play. DJs who like dance music will join the station when they hear their favorite music on the air.

Freeform from 10AM-6PM. Let the DJ say and play anything they want, even if they play the same songs Kiss 95.7 plays (no curses obviously), hourly 5-minute newscasts and 1-minute "newsflashes" every 15 minutes. The DJs can write those themselves or have other volunteers do it. It will make it sound like the station serves the community well. Of course, the shows will sound bad at first. It's important for someone to listen to new DJ's shows and give them feedback immediately after the show's over.

It would also have broadcasts of local high school and college football/basketball, and sports would pre-empt other shows.

Students would have first preference in becoming a DJ

This station would be a combination of what my high school station was and a college station that has high quality programming.
