New PD at KVET-AM....the beginning of the end?

KVET-AM (1300 the Zone, sportstalk and UT Sports) just hired Gregg Henson as their new PD. You may remember him from his stint as PD and afternoon host of ESPN 1530 several months ago. You may also remember what a moron this guy was spending as much as an hour and a half some days talking about and insulting the personalities on the Zone as well as the officials at UT. The attacks were pretty personal at times. Not only is that just stupid radio practice, its going to be interesting over at Clear Channel now that this bozo is "in charge".

I give him two months before he goes back to Detroit. If you look at the history of his moves over the past three years, he hasn't stayed in a place for over a year.

The big question is: who on the 1300 airstaff gets axed so he can have his own show?

Gregg joined us on this weekend's Radio Racket by mobile phone while driving from here in Philadelphia (he recently left as PD/mornings at WPEN) to his new gig down there at KVET. He starts Monday, and chatted with us for about 30 minutes in the show's second hour about his plans. It certainly didn't sound like "the end was near" for KVET. How much of the station is local? Could a syndicated show be replaced with a local Henson show? (That's what happened here, as the station became more localized during Henson's tenure.) Henson's morning show was starting to really get its stuff together when he left the station. As for his ripping of KVET hosts when he was at the other place, he did some of that here (versus Sports giant WIP)-- but it's all just schtick.

I know Gregg's not a big fan of hard-core sports "geek" talk shows. I'm not sure how KVET sounds right now in that regard, but if it is all stats-type sports talk, that'll probably change.

Our show talks about radio for four hours every Friday night, and replays continuously all weekend long. Feel free to check it out on Audio18.com. Thanks in advance for allowing the plug, and I'm sure Gregg will fit in just fine at KVET once he gets into his groove.

Actually Gregg and his wife just secured a significant amount of funding to launch a completely-non-radio-oriented business in the Austin area. He won't be leaving in two months, guaranteed.

It's not like he was an out-of-work radio guy desperately sending out T&R all over the place. He'd decided to leave the business, and was approached by Clear Channel about the opportunity. It's my understanding it took a bit of convincing on CC's part just to get him down there to talk.

Ripping competing stations/talent on-air is only stupid radio practice if you're the leader. If you're the new kid on the block and few are listening, you've pretty much got nothing to lose as long as you do it carefully.

I can understand what all of you are saying....however, when a personality/PD spends his entire time on the air in a market attacking another station for hours at a time even encouraging listeners to prank call the other station and then that other station hires him as PD? It makes that second station look like idiots. I've talked to some people at the ESPN affiliate that Henson worked at and apparantly he was not only a jerk on the air, but also with the clients and caused the station to lose a few. KVET-AM is very tied in with UT Sports and I know from people over there that they can't stand this guy. That's kind of like biting the hand that feeds you. This is just a bad hire all the way around.

I used to work for the station, and still have friends on the inside, so here's my take..

Laffer - you're ignorant of the situation. If you heard this morning's "send off" of one of the Zone producers, you'd understand the mood in that building. If Henson told you that they begged him to work there, he's lying.. They begged one of their former PD's (Chuck Meyer) to come back, but Henson was basically the only one who would work for that type of money. He and his wife supposedly do some internet thing, so they can be based wherever they want - he wasn't taking the job reluctantly.
