New "Radio Punjab" in Seattle area on 1560 khz

It seems that perhaps owners of the KRIZ / KZIZ / KYIZ cluster decided to make some money off the growing South Asian community in the metro -- former "smooth jazz" KZIZ 1560 is now South Asian.

I heard it last night, with a female announcer and "Radio Punjab" ID's. They are associated with several other similarly named stations, which I think are in California.

Ya heard it here first. :)
 
They seem to still be smooth jazz in the evenings.
Is this the same thing as KVRI, KRPA, KRPI, etc? The dial is being littered with Punjabi stations up there in NW WA.

But this is the first to target the Tacoma area; the others you mention are efforts to serve the Vancouver, BC, market.You are forgetting KKDZ 1250 "Radio Desi" in Seattle, too.
 
The switch to "Radio Punjab" occurred at 4pm on Sunday, March 6.

Smooth Jazz did not reappear on KZIZ, as Radio Punjab's playout computer was connected in place of SJ's.

Radio Punjab's ownership has a couple of small stations up North, where a similar company operates a larger station.

An unrelated operator is running the Desi 1250 station in Seattle.

As I understand it, the "South Asian" population up there has some respectable numbers. Given most people around here disregard AM stations as having any practical relevance, I'm not sure you could call handing the market 3 of them, and maybe a couple of FMs, "littering the dial"....
 
That's too bad. Another SJ officially has bitten the dust.
 
This will last until they fail to pay the bill. Which is how they left their last Seattle signal rental.

Maybe there is still hope for SJ after all.
 
I remember KWJZ 98.9 Smooth Jazz. I believe that station was around from the mid-1990s to about 2008. It was very relaxing to listen to in the evenings.
 
Sure I'll elaborate, When the Punjabs rented a subcarrier where I worked I was the one who had to pull the plug on their audio to get them to pay the 120 day past due bill. Once it went silent it wasn't long before a guy driving a taxi cab would swing by and pay up with wads of cash.

I don't know that it is the same now but I wouldn't expect a low budget operator to put up with that kind of thing for long.

Interesting. I wonder how they were listening to a subcarrier... at least in numbers worth the effort.

In any case, your use of "they" seems dangerously broad. Unless you know that these particular people are actually the same as your "Punjabs", you are connecting them to a situation they may have had nothing to do with and are putting them in a box they have yet to show they belong in.
 
If done right Desi Radio/Bollywood Radio could generate a nice chunk of revenue. 1250 was the first and it didn't surprise me that there is another. As long as you can cover the main area where they are. Dealerships can do very well buying this format.
