New Spanish & Hip Hop stations coming to Louisville?

B

It looks like Clear Channel are conducting research in the Louisville market for both Hip Hop (ala Hot 104) and Spanish. Does this mean they are going to axe WTFX The Fox and split the simulcast up into 2 different formats? It would be the logical thing to do. God knows they haven't put ANY effort into promoting The Fox since they moved it to a class A signal at 93.1.

Spanish will debut on 101.7 soon, unless someone changed their mind recently. I don't think the Fox is going anywhere soon. If it even has half the ratings it had at 100.5 it will be fine. Tony and Dwight are developing a following and the ratings are steadily coming back since Stern was kicked off the air. The frequency doesn't help it, but they should be OK.

They also just hired a PD for the station to replace Michael Lee. No reason to do that if they're going to change the format anytime soon.

With the numbers that WTFX should expect to see they are not going to be able to support the salaries of their morning show. I would expect to see some sort of syndicated show going on in the near future. As far as hiring a PD for the station, Charlie Steele has been in the building for several years, it's not like they hired someone in. I really don't think the appointment of a PD for the Fox makes any difference at all. I do not believe that Clear Channel will stay the course with The Fox. My guess is that a flip is eminent.

Plus 93.1 seems to be a graveyard for either a doomed format or a format dejour. How many formats has 93.1 had since it signed on in the mid to late 90's

I believe 93.1 is on it's 5th format since it signed on in the Fall of 1998. It has carried these formats: Modern AC (She 93.1), Classic Country (93.1 the Bull), Smooth Jazz (Smooth 93.1) and Rock (93.1 the Fox).

Yep, Charlie Steele has been there for quite some time, no doubt, but Clear Channel doesn't pay someone extra for no reason at all. Charlie knows what he is doing. You don't go four months with out a program director and then name one and expect to flip the next week. Ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Besides, they've been on the frequency all of maybe 2 months, not even long enough to see what the trends are doing. When it tanks bad, they'll think about something else, but until it is way in the graveyard, it won't happen.

Tony and Dwight have a following that keeps evolving. Just who in the heck are they gonna bring in anytime soon? Lex and Terry?? Nope, that would take a little while even if they did try to because of the contract at LRS. John Boy and Billy on an active rock station. Nope, that doesn't work either. CC sure as heck won't drag anyone else in that's not Premiere syndicated. So let's give up the idea of the Tony and Dwight death sentence until someone can provide some evidence.

As for the failures on 93.1, there are lots of reasons for that: She 93.1 failed because a world famous jackass by the name of CC Matthews decided to flip the format-- a format that was in it's infancy and gathering listeners. The Bull failed because CC Matthews was in charge of it-- and it never had any guidance. Once the classic country came along and they really had the chance to make it work, it didn't fly. Why? The frequency isn't great, but it was there to protect WAMZ and evidently classic country doesn't appear to be the best sell in the end anyway(check the other stations doing it). So we come to Smooth Jazz. It was tried once with great fanfare and it failed. Second time through, it does the same.

I'm sure the Fox would love to be back on 100.5, but it's not going anywhere, at least not soon at 93.1.

Look for 101.7 to go Spanish and carry U of L sports. Other than that, nothing's gonna happen for a while.

Hmmm, "93.1 The Beat"? After today's numbers looks like The Fox is all but dead and buried.

Would Urban or CHR/Rhy interfere too much with 98.9 Kiss FM?
______________

stations coming to Louisville?

Or the existing 3 urban-type stations? How many of one format is enough?

Well, if it takes a bite out of WGZB of WMJM, it's a loss for Radio One (not sure what you're referring to as the "third" urban station, since Kiss FM is a Clear Channel station and despite a heavy rhythmic lean, is a CHR/Pop station).
______________

Louisville

I don't get the strong feeling that Radio One has a clue about how to turn their ratings there into ad dollars. They may be better off cannibalizing off each other.

Re: Louisville

It would be interesting to see what would happen. When Radio One blew Hot 104 up the ratings for WGZB went through the roof. CC may use the 93.1 signal to take a chunk out of WGZB. Whatever happens, there are too many rock stations in the market.

Re: Louisville

I have to disagree with WGZB and WMJM being of the same format. The difference between the two is as the same as comparing WTFX to WVEZ. By checking the playlist of both stations, one will realize that the songs are totally different. WGZB's playlist contains mostly current upbeat hip hop music while WMJM playlist contains of mostly R&B ballads with a mixture of Classic Soul music of the 70s, 80s, 90s and very little R&B currents. WGZB and WMJM may be labeled "Urban." However, the music and audience is definitely not the same. The bigger similarity was between WGZB and Hot 104. When Hot 104 signed off, WGZB's ratings improved. However, WMJM's ratings were not affected by Hot 104's dismissal. WGZB and KISS 98.9 have more similarity than WGZB and WMJM.
Speaking of the latest ratings, I wonder what is the future of Eagle 104.3.
Their ratings are also dipping down to the bottom.
Edited by The RadioFan on 10/26/05 01:03 AM.
