New station out of Modesto.... AM 840 The Patriot.

This station serves the Modesto and Merced areas supposedly. The station is only 5000 watts and it stretches down even into Fresno pretty clear. Not bad for only 5000 watts! NICE!!!

This station is very directional. It doesn't hit Stockton.

That's the old KTRB, now KMPH, both owned by Harry Pappas. The new KTRB is now on 860 in San Francisco. At night I pickup 840 well along I-80 in Fairfield.

Between KTRB 860 and KMPH 840, I found much better programing out of their Modesto station.

So this is a situation where market size doesn't matter it's how you run the station.

Your thoughts?

Newsperson

So, lets see, afternoons, the north valley is "blessed" with Savage and Dr Laura on KYOS, KSTE, and KMPH simultaneously!! Tightening the screws on The Tortured Valley. Brilliant!

I'm suprised the station doesn't hit Stockton. On one of their promo ads it says: "The Patriot AM 840 Merced, Modesto, Stockton; Merced, Modesto, Tracy; Merced, Modesto, Patterson." I haven't tested it out yet, but, I will be headed north on 99 to Sac today so I will see for myself how far north the signal really stretches.

I would think the station's primary market is Modesto. Whether other stations in
the valley carry some of the same programming it's irrelevant. Extra spillage into
Stockton, Sacramento, etc. is meaningless in attracting revenue.

Actually Michael, It DOES HIT STOCKTON! I now live in Extreme Northwest Stockton (in the Spanos West Area), and KMPH-840 comes in LOUD AND CLEAR on my radio (both home and car). No problems at all!!!

As you probaly found out Daniel, KMPH DOES reach into STOCKTON.

I'm being pedantic here, but the KTRB on 860 in San Francisco is the same one that used to be on 860 in Modesto.

As far as the FCC is concerned, KMPH on 840 is a new station.

I was travelling north to Sac today and it does not hit Stockton at all, Manteca and Tracy, a little bit of noise. Hopefully sometime in the near future, the station will soon realize they need to give it the Tim Taylor treatment, "More Power!!!"

That is funny DanielBoone. As I am writing this, I am listening to KMPH-840 with no trouble on my GE SUPERRADIO. And I live near INTERSTATE 5 and EIGHT MILE ROAD in Stockton. However, I can't pick up Local KSTN-1420 AFTER SUNSET. Nothing but Static!!!

The nighttime pattern hits Stockton nicely.

The daytime pattern has a major hull to the Northwest.

If someone at the station fails to change the pattern in the morning, I'm sure that you can pick up KMPH in Stockton quite well during the day.

Perhaps that antenna phasing is out of wack.
