New sunrise log: 740 KVOR Colorado Springs, CO.

A new one heard this morning at sunrise: 740 KVOR Colorado Springs (3.3/1.5 kw) at 1100z with ABC News and into several nice IDs, weak but clear copy for about 10 minutes until fade-out, 1003 miles. Super pest CFZM completely nulled thanks to the phased array. 740 #14.

That's a good one. Out of curiosity, though, could you refresh our memories and list all your 740 catches?

Great catch, although I wouldn't exactly consider CFZM a "super pest" in that they have one of the best sounding AM signals and a unique format that you can't find anywhere else on either AM or FM. And they stay on the own channel!

Contrast that to WBBM which splatters over AT LEAST 5 channels with occasional "spits" onto two more and sounds horrible. Now THAT station really is a super pest! In my area you can't even think about trying to listen to anything on 760, 770, 790, and 800. 750 and 810 aren't much fun to listen to either.

Point taken, poor choice of words probably on my part, but they do make hearing anything else on 740 a challenge at times from my location. Despite their huge signal here, JD asked about the others I've heard on 740. Here's the list sorted from closest to most distant, it looks like there's actually 15 in total. These have all been heard within the last couple of years by creating a deep null on CFZM using two antennas with a phaser.

WRPQ, sunrise
WNOP, sunrise
CFZM, the dominator here
WVLN, heard most mornings just before sunrise in the mix
KBOE, also being heard here lately, pre-sunrise with c/w music
WIRJ, heard before during auroral conditions but not common
KVOX, semi-common pre-sunrise
KRMG, heard often a year or two ago during evening hours, less common now
KCMC, heard just once or twice with a weak signal pre-sunrise
KVOR, just heard for the first time
KTRH, not common but they are occasionally heard pre-sunrise
KATK, heard just once around sunrise, 1228 miles
CBX, occasionally heard around sunrise, but not common, 1424 miles
KBRT, heard just once in February prior to their transmitter move to the mainland around sunrise, 1559 miles
KCBS, heard just once last September before sunrise, 1921 miles

Thanks for the list. To me it was surprising to see Texarkana's KCMC there, what with it being sandwiched in between KRMG and KTRH, and their E-W figure eight pattern sends so little signal your way.

Congratulations on KVOR. Impressive catch to add to your impressive list. I'm intrigued also by KBRT and KCBS. KCBS has been a "holy grail" for a lot of us east of the Mississippi. I've never heard it here, but obviously it can be done.

I see kilokat is missing a couple TN stations, WCXZ and WIRJ. Perhaps CFZM causes trouble for them...

Yes, TN not likely here due to the orientation of the BOG array - it nulls stations directly to the North and South of me and I don't have the space to lay out a north-south wire. I did score another new one this morning on 740: WDGY with a nice call letter ID and a long string of local ads for businesses in the Minneapolis area and then into True Oldies. It's mixing about equally with WVLN and another weaker one that is probably WRPQ. Nothing exotic this morning, but nice to finally scratch WDGY off the 740 list! Edit: KBOE "Hit Kicking Country" just came up out of nowhere with a nice signal, now on top of the channel at 7:53am local time.

@cyberdad I was thrilled when I caught KBRT and KCBS. I've spent a lot of time on 740 so I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. I haven't heard them since though! See the youtube link in my signature to listen to these two receptions.

What are you doing up this early on a Saturday? ;D

Just read this thread, and wanted to congratulate you on a very impressive list.

Getting KBRT from Avalon was one of my dreams.
