Except for a few glory years in the Charlie Findley ownership era, green uniform days with the A's, the bay area has always been a heavy Giants baseball market.
Yeah, it does seem like that. As someone who doesn't live in the bay area, it seems to me that the Giants popularity in the Bay Area is 10 times bigger then the A's.
It kind of seems that way a little bit in the NFL as well. The Raiders, while they did spend a few years in LA, have been mostly an Oakland team, but for the most part it seems like the Niners are the bigger draw in the bay as far as football goes, at least professionally.
It makes me wonder though: the Giants have a terrific looking stadium, while the A's share a stadium with the Raiders. Meanwhile, the 49ers play Candlestick aka 3Com aka Monster Aka wind tunnel Park, a stadium they probably should have left by now.
If it were me, I would have the Niners move to a new stadium somewhere in the bay area(which it sounds like might happen in the future), and either let the Raiders play in Candlestick, or move them to LA.
Partly because it seems like LA would be the perfect place for that team. Although considering what happened before and during the Niner-Raider game last Saturday, maybe LA wouldn't want the Raiders.
As for the Oakland Athletics, maybe a new stadium in the bay area would be good for them. Something like San Jose, or Santa Clara, etc.; there's who knows how many computer millionaires in Silicon Valley that would love to spend their money on something like this as well.
Question is would the A's ownership go for it? I would hate to see the A's become like the Seattle SuperSonics and have them move to San Antonio, Virginia, or who knows where else just because the team can't get a new stadium done.
It doesn't seem like that right now, but there is a history of winning and success in Oakland, that should stay there, and not end up in Vegas or somewhere else.
