New York City Radio at an all time Low!!

For-profit Broadcasting entities usually make programming decisions based on revenue or potential revenue; to simply play Elvis or Kyrgyzistan Goat-herder music because one is a fan of The King or goats would put at-risk frequencies/facilities worth many millions or hundreds of millions of dollars.

Since most of these Broadcast behemoths are publically-traded, the CEO, et al, would have to answer to the stockholders for poor decision making in the formatting of these outlets.

While your protest that not hearing Elvis or other types of music is duly noted and has merit, perhaps Elvis has been down-sized to being part of a niche format. Even the Beatles aren't the staples of standard Oldies stations they once were. And, that's a shame.

kev: I am furious that R-I doesn't allow people to look at profiles so you cannot e-mail anyone: (so I have to broadcast this...) how much have you looked into broadcast meteorology? I might be in college in the woods of VT having fun on a 3000 watt radio station... but there options out there in the broadcast met field for anyone who Likes working hard or is really good at math and physics

ALTHOUGH I'M NOT A FAN OF ROCK, THERE'S NO STATION IN NYC THAT PLAYS ROCK CURRENTS.

Yes, but what do the shareholders think about the underperforming FM stations currently in NYC?

Unfortunately, as long as these underperforming (ratings-wise) NYC stations keep generating ad revenue and shareholders keep seeing $$$, nothing will be done. That's why Mix and KTU is still around. However, there is the argument that WNEW can bill just as well with another format (i.e. soft AC, country, whatever), but they just aren't ready to take that chance. Female-targeted rhythmic crap is the "in" demo being dictated by advertisers.

I find it hard to believe that those underperforming stations are generating as much revenue as they could with any format out there, however. Especially since they don't seem to be showing any growth in their new formats. We all know about PLJ and how it's successfully catered to the suburban soccer moms, but it doesn't seem like many stations can all play that game successfully. And even PLJ's numbers are beginning to show a little bit of slippage, at least according to the trends released today.

I agree!! For example, take the CBS cluster - FreeFM, Jack, and Mix - all doing poorly ratings-wise. The only think keeping them on air is the ad billing. However, I'm sure that they can bill just as well, if not better, with another format. It seems to me that radio programmers, especially those in NYC, look at alternative formats (i.e. oldies, country, soft AC) as "not good enough" or "out of touch" for NYC radio. I also don't buy that crap that the oldies format is dying and country won't work in NYC - what about the suburbs? Remember them? They are a large part of the NYC radio market. They have a high number of relevant listeners and strong purchasing power.
