New York Knicks Basketball On WMTR? Are You Kidding Me?

Over the last two to three weeks, WMTR is now currently running New York Knicks basketball throughout the regular season, and there’s only one problem, “Doo-Wop Drive” with Allan David Stein is not on WMTR, is this because of the basketball game. I switched over to Jimmy Howes over at WALL and I listened to it, and it plays 70’s, 80’s and 90’s mix without doo-wop.

Look at WRCR, they still got the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” every Friday with Bob Trivero, he does an excellent job playing classic doo-wop along with a few rare and obscure gems that you don’t hear anything else. WNHU over in New Haven, CT also has a doo-wop show on Tuesday night hosted by Rockin’ Richard and he does a great job playing doo-wop and a few other gems. On Sunday, there’s “Story Untold” hosted by PJ Noce, and he does a fabulous job playing doo-wop and some few rare and forgotten ones, and of course, there WFTL where Ken Held hosted his own “Doo-Wop Shop” on Sunday evenings, but no Allan David Stein’s “Doo-Wop Drive”, because of Knicks basketball.

Why is New York Knicks basketball running on an oldies station like WMTR instead of “Doo-Wop Drive”? They should’ve been gone to one of the sports stations like WEPN 1050/98.7 or WFAN 660/101.9, but WMTR is not a good fit for Knicks basketball.

I was going to listen to “Doo-Wop Drive” on either Alexa and I told her to play WMTR, and she says “Sorry! I’m having trouble playing your music.” And I was so upset. So I went to the Audacity app and check WMTR via stream, and nothing happened. So I went to the WMTR website, and I click “Listen Live”, and after only one ad, it plays straight oldies, not doo-wop, but it’s now jockless, and no Allan David Stein. His last show was back in mid-November, because New York Knicks basketball was about to start a week later, except he is in mornings now, but not on Friday nights.

I don’t know if “Doo-Wop Drive” is coming back to WMTR at some point after the Knicks basketball game on either regular season or post-season, we shall see.

How far east does their signal go during the day and evening as they are a Morristown station?

Daytime is hard to say, directly East, I want to say the western side of Lyndhurst. Beyond that, you have a lot of the Meadowlands transmitters wrecking havoc. Nighttime, I've hard WMTR during critical hours in Glastonbury, CT and was able to briefly receive them in Eastham, MA (Cape Cod) during the night.

local or pro sports is usually a good seller and makes good money.. and will make alot more than doo wop on a sub par am signal.

even if they didnt pay the talent who did the doo wop show, and they just ran regular ads liek any other day part.. youre going to make way less then sports.

I'd almost bet the WRCR doo wop host is paying for the time or at minimum, working for free.

and WNHU? Its volunteers.

Apples.. oranges.....

Mostly, it is about sales as Paul has said. A Doo Wop show on at night is a really tough sell to advertisers. Sports is several magnitudes easier to sell and actually is a fairly easy sell.

It's a Beasley station and I doubt that they are brokering time. It actually bills quite a bit for an AM. In part, this is due to its huge FM station but also because in smaller markets classic gold can be sold to local direct accounts still.

Maybe they are going with the Theory why Radio Stations Broadcast Sports 🏀 ? If you listen to the game in your car & turn it off. The next morning when you turn it on. You will still be listening to WMTR

I did checked Google that Knicks basketball can also be heard on WEPN-FM at 98.7 FM, and on WMTR 1250 AM.

In addition, WMTR is now carrying New York Rangers hockey which can also be heard on WEPN-FM at 98.7 FM. That is so strange, carrying two sports teams on an oldies station. Is this due to have better ratings than oldies and doo-wop combined?

And I just noticed that WMTR is simulcasting both Knicks and Rangers game from WEPN-FM. Is this going to be the future for WMTR unless WEPN-FM’s “ESPN Radio” is going to be gone by August 2024? We shall see.

I think Both teams know WEPN will be History next fall. So they signed with Fox Sports Radio which is Broadcast Exclusively on One of Beasely’s New Jersey Stations & Games for both teams can be heard on their other stations.

Better ratings and better revenue, as explained before.. can be had from sports comapred to doo wop.

Sports fans come in all ages and its an easy sell for radio sales teams.

Doowop fans are aged 70 to dead and its a very very hard sell.

I doubt WMTR is simulcasting WEPN, but rather just running the same programming feed from thre NY Knicks Radio Network

Always Interest, are you unfamiliar with how quote/reply works? You are using two separate posts where one is all that's needed. Your remarks should be entered underneath the quoted portion, not in a separate post.

So that’s why, fans of “Doo-Wop Drive” with Allan David Stein and longtime fans of the “Doo-Wop Shop” hosted by the late, great Don K Reed would love the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” with Bob Trivero. But all I can say is, I love Bob Trivero, because he does an amazing job hosting a doo-wop show on WRCR compared other hosts like Allan David Stein, PJ Noce, Cool Bobby B, Ken Held and Rockin’ Richard.

They also put out a podcast for the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” every week via Spotify. And guess what, I have a link to listen to all of his shows.

I listened to both “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” on WRCR and “Doo-Wop Drive” on WMTR as part of a “Doo-Wop Double Feature” where they have two doo-wop shows back to back with Bob Trivero and Allan David Stein.

Now that WMTR is not airing “Doo-Wop Drive” on Friday nights because of Knicks basketball or Rangers hockey, the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” is the only show left, and one half of a “Doo-Wop Double Feature”.

I called them a 1-2 combo.
