New York Knicks Basketball On WMTR? Are You Kidding Me?

I'm sure MTN likes Doo Wop and looks for specialty shows featuring the genre. But for many decades in AM radio, the rule has been "Everything will get preempted by a live sports broadcast." Since the Knicks and Rangers are also on another Beasley station in New Jersey, WCTC New Brunswick, we can see why WMTR is running these teams. The company made a deal to carry the games.

I can remember summers in Northern New England where nearly every AM station in small towns was a Boston Red Sox affiliate. Turn the dial and hear the same game on the station in Rochester NH, Dover NH, Wolfeboro NH, Biddeford ME, Sanford ME, Portland ME, Lewiston ME, Brunswick ME. Each station got to sell the Red Sox to its local advertisers and collect the money (after paying the team its fees). Who cares if the same game can be heard on multiple spots on the dial?

As David says, live major league sports are easy to sell to local advertisers. Sometimes you can tell, the company owner likes the team even if his product doesn't naturally line-up with sports. A major tea brand sponsors the Yankees on WCBS. I associate baseball with many things but not tea. A processed meats company was a decades-long sponsor of LA Dodgers broadcasts, even though it's likely that women, not men, do the grocery shopping in most families. But if the owner likes the team, the salesperson gets their foot in the door and makes the sale... and likely has some luxury box seats for the owner and his family.

As for the title "Knicks Basketball on WMTR? Are You Kidding Me?" Nope, no one is kidding.

The Bigelow Tea spots come from the Joe Torre era.

Now that WMTR is not airing “Doo-Wop Drive” on Friday nights because of Knicks basketball or Rangers hockey, the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” is the only show left, and one half of a “Doo-Wop Double Feature”.
Be thankful they even have a Doo-Wop show. As my father once said: "Turn that crap off. The only people who listen to that music are either dead or should be!"

So that’s why, fans of “Doo-Wop Drive” with Allan David Stein and longtime fans of the “Doo-Wop Shop” hosted by the late, great Don K Reed would love the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” with Bob Trivero. But all I can say is, I love Bob Trivero, because he does an amazing job hosting a doo-wop show on WRCR compared other hosts like Allan David Stein, PJ Noce, Cool Bobby B, Ken Held and Rockin’ Richard.

They also put out a podcast for the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” every week via Spotify. And guess what, I have a link to listen to all of his shows.

I listened to both “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” on WRCR and “Doo-Wop Drive” on WMTR as part of a “Doo-Wop Double Feature” where they have two doo-wop shows back to back with Bob Trivero and Allan David Stein.

I called them a 1-2 combo.

Yeah and? all of this means absolutely nothing, especially to advertisers

Since if you don’t hear a doo-wop show every Friday due to Knicks and Rangers game on WMTR, you can listen to “Doo-Wop Cafe”. They have some great doo-wop songs, and it’s now running 24/7. Check out “Doo-Wop Cafe”, and if you were a longtime fan of the “Doo-Wop Shop” with Don K Reed, you should give it a listen.

i think youre the only one here listening to this

I’m listening to it, and I don’t have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel either.

Ok, so i slightly exaggerated.. but the point again, boils down to its just not sellable, even moreso if its on an AM station. i know a station that ran a standards format and only billed $3000 a month.... if it wasnt for the sister stations in the cluster, that AM.. an old one too, wouldve gone dark years ago

It doesnt matter if you dont have one foot on a banana peel or in a grave, youd be an outlier in the format.. yo ucan find more, but sales are done in the average listener of the format... and stuff like that is well known by stations

I'd bet the WRCR DJ is workign for free, but keeps say 40 percent of his ad revenue or he pays for the time. I wouldnt be surprised if the WMTR DJ is in the same situation.

Plus, doowop just sounds old.. and to most radio audiences these days, i dont care about what you think reality is.. its the perception they have that becomes their reality...... and i bet if WMTR did mroe doo wop, theyd get more tune outs

Honestly, you wanna know how many average joe schmoe sports fans know the game can be heard on a bunch of stations all over? very few, because the average joe probably cant hear them. Some smarter than the average bear sports fan might realize its on a station in a neighboring city or something.

I'm not saying listeners are dumb, but they dont realize nearly as much as we remember we radio people and the listeners dont.

Tonight and for the next three weeks, Alan David Stein's Doo-Wop Drive will be on Thursday night, due to the Friday night games.

That’s great! I’m looking forward to listen to it on Thursday with the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” which is the following day on WRCR. Sweet!

After listening to “Doo-Wop Drive”, the 2nd half of a “Doo-Wop Double Feature” with “Doo-Wop Dream Machine”, Allan announced back a few days before New Year’s Eve that his show will be back on Friday for two weeks which is January 12th and 19th.

And I got bad news! “Doo-Wop Drive” is going to be on Wednesday January 24th. WTF?????

Why is “Doo-Wop Drive” going to be a on Wednesday? This is the first time ever in history that a doo-wop show is on Wednesday. This is going to be due to the Knicks basketball, and now Rangers hockey which were also carrying on WMTR, and both teams came from WEPN until the station on 98.7FM and 1050AM will be ending by late summer 2024.

This is ridiculous! I would change it from “doo-wop” to “womp-womp”.

I hope if both Knicks and Rangers games on WMTR will end by mid April, (except the wild card and playoffs as well as the post-season which will also ending by either May or June), “Doo-Wop Drive” will return to its normal schedule on Friday nights.

Let’s hope if the show doesn’t screwed up.

damn that's crazy but if i were you, i'd be thankful it would even be returning to the airwaves

I just heard it this morning that “Doo-Wop Drive” is on tonight instead of Friday, because today is Wednesday and Knicks basketball or Rangers hockey can be heard Thursday and Friday nights where it came from WEPN. I’ll keep listening to Allan David Stein throughout the morning to give you some updates for February.

And also, WRCR has the “Doo-Wop Dream Machine” on Fridays with Joe Trivero and Jeff Lewis which is now part of a now combined “Doo-Wop Double Feature”.

Just to bump this thread that I want to let you know that Knicks basketball broadcast is out at WMTR, whoop-dee-do! The only game left is Rangers hockey. Again, Knicks is out of the playoffs. I hope “Doo-Wop Drive” with Allan David Stein will be on Thursday night instead of Friday, because of the Rangers game where they are doing the Stanley Cup Finals.

I hope Knicks and Rangers will be on WEPN 1050 this fall after ESPN signs off at 98.7 when Beasley ends its deal, they might go back to play oldies, not Knicks and Rangers. What are your thoughts?
