Classic rock stations are continuing to rise. According to RadioInsight, the current ratings for Q104,3 in the New York market are at an all time high. In addition, the article states that this is the best a rock station has ever done in this area.
In the Nassau/Suffolk oversll ratings, Classic Rock WBAB leaped in one month from 6.7 to 8.5. Q104.3 is rated #2, rising from 4,6-5.1. But automated WBZO is way down the list, and saw its ratings drop.
Q104.3 is also #1 in the M/S/U ratings.
Could the rise of classic rock be related to a slump in contemporary pop music?

Yikes, not looking good for La Mega.
It looks fine. Spanish language stations don't sell against general market stations, they sell against other Spanish language stations.

I suspect it's due to the declining numbers of younger people listening to FM radio. An aging radio audience helps older music formats.

Still feel here -- especially nowadays -- that the majority of the NYC book listeners (as well as other big marlets) sigh and settle for 'the music station at work that everybody can agree is better than nothing'.

doesn't that go against the whole point of the block's existence ò-ó

Throwback hip hop without currents fails almost everywhere it's tried. HOT 96.9 in Boston wins by also playing "Big Energy" and "Get Into It (Yuh)" and the like 32 times a week. People don't lose interest in currents on their 40th birthday.

If you want currents, change to KTU. This station has a narrower target.

Is it perhaps too narrow?

Remember: The goal is sales, not ratings. So if the narrow target is sellable, then it's good. The ONLY reason they did this format was because sales wanted it. Not for music. They had to build this format from the ground up. And they can see the ratings. They know what the ratings are. It's not a secret that only we here at RD know.

I realize money is the sole objective of many in this forum, as well as some owners. However, when you have no passion for the product you're trying to sell it usually ends up being bad. A bad product deserves bad results.

Don't care about the creative side? How about selling insurance instead. Too many entertainment executives seem to forget what business they're actually in.

We're talking about two different departments here. The sales people told the market manager what they wanted, and the market manager contacted the programming people. They're the ones who have passion for the product. I recently had a chance to actually meet Ed Lover. He hosts evenings at WXBK. I will tell you that there is no one more passionate about this music, and more passionate about his audience. He represents this format and genre very well.

So I agree with the first part of your post. If you don't have passion for the product, do something else. But the sales people are not involved in the product other than saying who the target audience should be. After that, it's up to the creative folks. Just like in the music business, you have the lawyers and business folks who only want to make money. Then you have the creative folks who go in the studio. Understand? The airstaff at WXBK is very good. They're not the problem.

Ed Lover is a pro. I respect the talent far more than the format which so many members here knew was was poorly conceived right from the outset, and has been borne out by Nielsen.

The sales people told the market manager what they wanted

It's hard to believe they conducted proper market research before coming up with it, based on the results seen month after month. Maybe they did a push poll.
