New York Metro Radio Ratings: June 2023

They could move The Fan to 94.7 and put the block on 101.9. Unrelated note would anyone want to do a radio zoom call or a podcast on NYC radio? That would be fun. Side note I finally found out how to change the color of the font on here! I love it!

Jack is Audacy's second highest rated station in L.A.
It did quite well for CBS Radio when it was on in New York.

These are heritage stations. If Audacy were to start such a station today, it would not benefit from such heritage.

Once again, Audacy is having a lot of trouble launching new stations around the country. The Block may be one of its better performers.

IHeart doesn’t seem to be overly concerned that WKTU plays lots of music that is also on Z-100, and some of what is aired on Lite FM.
Those of us with 50 to 60 years of experience with large overlapping clusters know that it is what each station plays that the other(s) don't play that defines you. I've seen cluster-mates play as much as 50% overlapping music, yet not significantly share cume and without one station stealing cume from another.

However, lighter colors make it much harder for most people to read. That is why, going back nearly 600 years, books have been printed in black, not light blue or other colors. It works for children's books, though.

With relatively few FM stations in this metro available for secular music, it seems odd that Audacy picked such a niche format for WXBK 94.7, in a category with plenty of established competitors.
if they can’t get a sales team that can successfully sell Country, then I think a variety hits format (ie Jack) would make sense. It allows for lots of flexibility. For example, such a station could play lots of classic rock, since Q104.3 is doing so well. If demand were to shift for music that is not so old, they could play newer stuff. This is somewhat comparable to WKTU, which has undergone many tweaks in response to popularity and competition.
Is WXBK not hitting Audacy's benchmark? Does it need a 3.0 to make money? I'm unsure why this station continuously gets discussed as if the format needs to be scrapped asap as a failure. I have no idea what it makes but if Audacy thought it was a loss and had no hope presumably they'd change it. They program successful classic hip, hop in other markets and we've all seen stations increase ratings with new talent and tweaks. It's also possible that it's playlist isn't really classic hip, hop per se. NYC is the birth place of hip, hop but playing Mariah Carey on regular rotation has nothing to do with New Yorks hip hop era and you can hear her old songs on KTU 10 times a day.
I'm just guessing here but that's my take, wrong or right..I don't know.

I don't believe I'm nit-picking THAT much here vis a vis the M-S-U ratings.
WOR sends a lot of its signal toward that market, They show up.
WCBS and WFAN, from farther off, show, and fairly well.
But no WABC whatsoever is listed?

They will probably see if the station gets good ratings when it gets a better signal and if it fails they might do that.
If I understand correctly, the only signal improvement they could make, a slight move closer to Manhattan with a change in ERP and HAAT, has been done. For all practical purposes, beyond that there is nothing they can do to further improve metro NYC coverage.

And if they moved, they would not get a "better signal". They would simply try to move the transmitter to be more centrally located in relation to the MSA population.

As Big A says, you have to be subscribed to be listed. I can't see why they would want the MSU ratings, anyway. There are no local direct accounts in that subset of the NYC market that would be buying directly on a big NYC signal.

Exactly. In my opinion 94.7 should have just went straight classic hip-hop and r&b not a Throwback format. I change the station when I hear Ashanti and Mariah Carey with ODB. New York City tri-state area is an urban metropolitan area. I hope the station is successful, but they need to add more music in the playlist.

I'm not positive, but I don't think that I can ever recall a station with a ratings problem improving by expanding the playlist.

Perhaps what he meant to say is: 'they need to replace the songs I don't like with the songs I like.'

Their operating playlist is about 600 songs. Every week, they replace two-thirds of those songs with a different group of songs, again adding up to about 600 songs. So chances are, if you go back after a week, you may hear a completely different group of songs.

A lot of stations replace songs every week. Not many replace 2/3rds of their list every week.
