As of this time there are 47 people reported to be at the site of the New Zealand Volcano Eruption

WHAKATANE, New Zealand (AP) — Experts said geothermal activity on a New Zealand volcanic island increased significantly on Wednesday, dealing a blow to relatives waiting for crews to recover the bodies that remain there following a deadly eruption two days earlier.

Volcanic tremors rose in the morning, accompanied by an increase in the amount of steam and mud being released at White Island, the GeoNet seismic monitoring agency said.

“We interpret these signals as evidence of continued high gas pressures within the volcano,” the agency said. “The situation remains highly uncertain as to future activity. Eruptions in the next 24 hours are still likely to occur.”

Six deaths were confirmed after Monday’s eruption. Five people died at the time of the blast or soon after, while a sixth person died Tuesday night at an Auckland hospital.

Another eight people are believed to have died, with their bodies remaining on the ash-covered island for now. And 30 people remain hospitalized, including 25 in critical condition. Many of the injured suffered severe burns.

Bruce Bird, an acting assistant police commissioner, said they were monitoring the situation hour by hour.

“Safety for our staff is a huge priority for us,” Bird said. “And we’ve got to get this right.”

Bird said they had deployed a drone over the island to measure gas levels after strong winds had thwarted those attempts on Tuesday.

But helicopter pilot Mark Law said the delay was hard to understand and that if he was making the decision, he would leave immediately.

“It would take 20 minutes to get out there. We know where they are,” he said, referring to the bodies. “Then we could bring them home.”

Survivors from the Monday eruption ran into the sea to escape the scalding steam and ash and emerged covered in burns, said those who first helped them.

The tragedy will have an ongoing effect on the town of Whakatane, which road signs tout as the gateway to White Island. As well as being an important tourist draw for the 20,000 people who live here, the volcano has an almost mystical significance, its regular puffing a feature of the landscape.

Reports of Deaths in the New Zealand Volcano are mentioned here.

New Zealand Police Deputy Commissioner John Tims said officers are trying to return bodies to grieving families.

'The nature of the injuries that people have suffered is severe and means identifying them is a complex matter,' he said.

'We are working through the process to identify them as quickly as possible, to return those who have died to their loved ones.'

Police Minister Stuart Nash told RNZ: 'As you can imagine there are a number in hospital who cannot communicate because they have had significant burns not only to skin but to internal organs.'

'They cannot speak in any way, shape or form.'

Police said the sixth victim, whose name and nationality has not been released, was being treated in hospital before dying of their injuries late Tuesday.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said 'up to three' of the dead are Australians, while Malaysia has confirmed one of its citizens is among the dead. None of them have been identified.

The victims range in age from 13 to 72. Two are from the United Kingdom, four from Germany, 24 from Australia, five from New Zealand, two from China, one from Malaysia and nine from the United States.

Of those on the island, 38 were passengers from the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship which made its way to New Zealand from Sydney, having left on 4 December.

9 Victims names released from the Eruption in New Zealand.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Police released on Wednesday the names of nine people missing in New Zealand's volcano disaster. They are seven Australian tourists who made a day trip to White Island from a cruise ship that had left Sydney a few days earlier and two tour guides from New Zealand. Police said the list is not complete because they have not been able to speak to all next of kin. Six people were earlier confirmed dead from Monday's eruption.

Police have said they presume all people still on the volcanic island are dead.

About 30 rescued people remain hospitalized, many with critical burns.

Half of the 47 visitors on the island when the volcano erupted were Australians and most were from the cruise ship. Authorities say there were 24 Australians, nine Americans, five New Zealanders, four Germans, two Britons, two Chinese and a Malaysian on the island when the disaster struck.

Some of the stories of those listed by police as officially missing:

ADELAIDE FATHER AND STEP DAUGHTER

The Dallow family in Adelaide in Australia said they were told by police on Wednesday that the body of Gavin Dallow, 53, had been identified in Auckland. They learned late Tuesday that his wife, Lisa Hosking, 48, was critically injured with burns to half her body and was being treated in a Hamilton hospital.

Police said Hosking's 15-year-old daughter, Zoe, was missing. Her family said police told them she was thought to be on the island.

Dallow’s father, Brian Dallow, said his lawyer son would have examined the risks before taking his family to the volcano.

“Gavin was always one for being fairly articulate on what he did,” Brian Dallow told reporters. “I’m pretty sure that they weren’t fully informed of the dangers, otherwise they wouldn’t have gone.”

St. Aloysius College, where Zoe was a student, said the school community shared the family's deep grief.

"The whole staff, along with many students and their families, have gathered in the chapel to pray for Zoe and her family and to console one another," principal Paddy McEvoy said.

"The family's pain and that of their friends and the school community are beyond words, yet we cherish all that we have shared with Zoe and her family over 10 years," McEnvoy added.

New Zealand is totally unprepared to deal with major calamities.
On the south island, there was a "major" fire a few years ago
and I watched as firefighters battled the blaze with garden hoses!

The South Island is virtually all rural with a few populated cities of modest size along the coast. It is also severely mountainous and a lot of it is very difficult to get into. The North is totally different.

Tried tuning to one of their SW frequencies for the latest news and all of RNZI's frequencies seem to be dead. Even their flagship DRM frequency of 5975 is dead. Their long time overnight frequency of 5945 is also dead.
Things are not good.
