News corp/YES deal could help Murdoch start NATIONAL sports network

http://business.time.com/2012/11/26...y-the-deal-could-help-news-corp-take-on-espn/

>>Third, and perhaps most importantly, the deal significantly bolsters News Corp.’s strategic negotiating position as it lays the groundwork for a new national sports network to compete with cable sports leader ESPN. ...Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that News Corp. was working to acquire the programming rights from pay-TV carriers and sports teams that will be crucial to the viability of a national Fox sports network, which is reportedly being developed under the working name Fox Sports 1.

(On radio Fox Sports is syndicated by Clear Channel. In some places like Portland OR Fox
Sports displaced liberal talk, further enraging progtalk listeners who were convinced the
whole Romney/Bain/Clear Channel situation was silencing their voice of dissent)

Sport big money on TV and radio. "We are! Fox Sports!" The big Fox gets bigger.

Fox is reportedly offering $6b over 25 years for rights to air LA Dodgers games. This along with the YES deal would give them a pretty good headstart for their national network. But the rights may go even higher than that because after Nov. 30 the Dodgers can solicit bids from other companies like Time Warner who signed a huge deal with the Lakers.

Time Warner could easily play spoiler here- as they have to justify the $3 billion invested over the next 20 years for the Lakers TV rights. They were able to get the other MSO's, AT&T, Verizon and DirecTV on board to the tune of what many have said is $3.95 per subscriber per month. If they get the Dodgers for their new Time Warner Cable Sportsnet- I imagine this number will go even higher.

TWC, which covers the vast majority of Los Angeles and Orange Counties- and large portions of the Inland Empire as well, has their new channel in between KCBS and KNBC on the digital tier- so its prime placement and an investment that they are certainly going to want to grow.

In the SF Bay Area, the local teams have actually gone the opposite direction for play-by-play coverage. For example, the Giants games (outside of the playoffs and World Series) were broadcast this past season by Comcast Sports Net. In previous years, this was Fox Sports Net. When or why this changed, I'm not sure since I don't follow sports very closely.

No original analysis on my part, but it should be noted that this, combined with Rutgers joining the Big Ten in 2014, is probably also part of Fox's efforts to get the Big Ten Network carried on more systems in the East. Using YES as a club to get coverage for BTN would be an obvious move on Fox's part. (Apologies if this has already been discussed elsewhere.)

Actually, it seems like Speed is now more likely than ever to be the home for Fox' new all sports channel:

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2012/11/26/Media/FoxSports1.aspx

If anything, they already have more high-profile events ready than NBC or CBS' sports channels. Fox's MLB extension hinted about a number of games that would go to a channel like this. And those college football games on FX the past couple of years was probably there for the sake of waiting for this channel to lauch. Plus you have existing NASCAR shows, UFC rights (I know Fuel is pretty much a UFC channel but that's something to work with), and the 2018 World Cup (I know they have a soccer channel, but this is in more homes).

And yes, I do believe that Rutgers to the Big Ten has a lot to do with trying to get the Big Ten Network on basic tiers in the NYC area. Buying into YES helps.

Initial reports saw Fuel transforming into the new Fox Sports 1, not Speed. I suppose Speed being in more homes led to it being the breeding ground for the new network.

Great, now even YES, by far the best RSN in the country, will be ruined! Maybe it's time to shut off the TV for good once and for all.

That changed because Comcast bought NBC & CSN became a part of the NBC Sports family of networks

And speaking of teams NOT on Fox, here in Colorado, the Nuggets & the Avs haven't been on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain (Now ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain - More on that in a moment) since Fall 1996, which is shortly after Altitude (Owned by Stan Kronecke, who owns the the two teams) was launched. It has since aligned itself as a regional outlet for ESPN Plus (Carrying mostly Big East & a smattering of third tier SEC Football among other things)

Until two years ago, the Colorado Rockies have always been on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. But now they've been forced to change to ROOT Sports, been stripped of ALL Fox Sports graphics, theme music, etc. Fox Sports can no longer claim the Rockies (Or the Pac 12 affiliated Colorado Buffaloes for that matter) as a team under their belt. In fact, with less & less programming coming from Fox Sports Net (Thanks in part to the Fox Sports College Football deal that has MORE & MORE Pac 12 games on the big Fox network & FX - An entertainment channel BTW), ROOT Sports has had to scrap for anything it can get (Especially since Colorado is no longer Big 12 country & never was Conference USA territory, which is why we've seen more & more of those games on FCS this year)

If it wasn't for TheMtn falling apart as a network & becoming the hodgepodge, fragmented sad shape that it's in now, ROOT Sports would be in A LOT of trouble & would be in A WORLD of hurt (If it even still around at all)

And with Comcast being THE ONLY game in (Pretty much) the whole state (No Time Warner or Cox anywhere), HOW does Fox Sports propose to convince Comcast to carry their national network here? What's to stop Comcast from buying ROOT Sports, rebranding it as a CSN (If they even have to do that) & aligning it with NBC Sports? (Remember, ROOT Sports does carry Mountain West Conference games on a regional basis just as NBC Sports Network carries the Conference nationally)

Tough sell isn't it?

Cheers & 73 :D

It is a tough sell but converting Speed will make a difference. As long as the contracts allow it, there wont be any negotiating to get it on lineups except for better placement. Fox also has a heck of a stable to give them leverage. What's stopping Fox from pulling FNC, FSN, FX, etc. off of telco lineups if someone balks at carrying FS1? If they can bundle it all together, it will be awfully hard for operators to turn them down.

As far as ROOT goes, I'm not sure how its relevant to FS1, since that's an RSN and a tiny one at that. That said, there's a very good reason as to why Comcast won't be partnering with it. DirecTv owns it. Unless some crazy deal is made that gives Directv carriage of CSN Philly, etc. , I doubt Directv will allow Comcast more carriage power over them. All of ROOT's networks are in heavy Comcast areas and I don't think that's a coincidence. Directv wants a way to neutralize them a little when it comes to RSN carriage.

And just to clarify as to how Fox Sports Bay Area turned into CSN - Fox bought into FSBA (it was Sportschannel at the time) in the 90's with Cablevision keeping a majority ownership stake. Cablevision sold that stake to Comcast in 2007. In 2008, to help keep the Giants in the fold, each side gave up a percentage of ownership to them, with Fox giving up the most. This left Comcast with 45 percent, the Giants with 30 percent and Fox with 25 percent ownership. With that deal, the FSN branding got kicked to the side.

It looks News Corp is in a bit of a spending spree, as they're planning on buying Cleveland-based SportsTime Ohio (home to the Indians) and are rumored to make a play for the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (home to the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals, which both teams co-own).

Fox Sports already has the broadcast rights to a huge chunk of all of the MLB teams in the country; not counting the Yankees, Tribe, Nats, or O's, thenotable exceptions are both of the Chicago teams, both of the Bay Area teams, the Mets, Red Sox, Mariners, Pirates, Rockies, and Astros (who will join Comcast's new Houston sports network in 2013).
