News directors / "That's our opinion. We'd welcome yours" Editorials

I make these points not because I hate talk radio, but because if this format is to survive, it's got to evolve. And becoming more narrow in its topics and audience is not a business strategy.

The format can't evolve until the audience evolves. As I said, the audience has become polarized. You can't program rap music to a country fan, and the minute a talk station starts talking anything off the conservative agenda, the audience goes away. Fix that, and then things will change. There was a thread someplace else about top of the hour national news. One talk station dropped its ABC News affiliation when they covered a story that didn't fit the conservative agenda. So the station picked up Salem News or Fox News.

Try talking mixed politics at a family affair. See how long you last. That's just a micro-example of the problems radio stations face. If you think it's limited as a listener, you should try working in the business. This is why there isn't any growth now in the talk format, and really won't be until this whole thing cools down.

Getting back to the OP, it's a reason why stations see no upside in doing editorials. They always distance themselves with the disclaimer that the views of the host don't reflect that of the station ownership or management. If they were to do editorials, that would remove all doubt, and open the station for advertisers pulling out.

You can "believe" whatever you want. I can tell you in the real world of radio programming, you go with what works, and the only thing that works is conservative.

Experience tells me that one is on slippery ground if you try to go head-on against the observations of BigA. But let's try it.

There is a brand new thread in the Atlanta Forum and the title indicates a question about the future of Huckabee. Then it ventures into the territory of who might be a good replacement for Boortz on the WSB blowtorch.

The idea that only conservatism sells may be a defensible debate declaration if we live in a one-dimensional world where every one, every thing, every -ism can only be conservative or progressive. No other choices.

And then you have someone dangle the Monica Perez pinata in front of you and suddenly you have to ask: Where is the foul line? How far to the right can you get in being Conservative before you fall off the edge of the earth. Monica Perez says that Libertarians like Rand Paul and Bill Kristol are so flaming Liberal that we must abandon them. Is there something in the broadcast industry that is equivalent to the Vatican Council that ordains the proper candidate to be The Pope of Conservative Talk on the radio? Could this lady ever replace Rush as "the gold standard" for Conservative Radio Talk?

Will she sell in New York or Chicago? Indianapolis?

Interesting thread. We'll see. Alls I know is I pitched a lot of hosts to a lot of people at a lot of stations, and they all told me they'll never work because they're not clearly conservative.

I'll refer you to that thread about "the liberal media bias." As I said there, if you're not singing from the conservative hymnal, you are immediately the enemy. That's bad for business.

I never thought Mike Malloy was that good. Certainly not the caliber of Randi Rhodes. I disagree with her more than I agree, but damn, she does a good show!

WGST had Tom Leykis on for some evening and weekend dayparts, IIRC. And don't forget Ralph from Ben Hill.

In speaking of news directors, does anyone know where News/Talk WSB-AM/WSBB-FM's Chris Camp has been? I've been hearing Amanda Moyer covering for him a lot. A few weeks back, Chris was on assignment down in Orlando, FL. Now what. Did he retire? I like Amanda Moyer. She does a great job. I do miss hearing Chris Camp. He makes a great fill-in for Scott Slade. Of course, these days when someone is needed to cover for Scott Slade, that person is none other than Mark Arum. Mark Arum also does a great job whether it be covering for Scott Slade, doing Triple Team Traffic, or his Saturday talk show, The Mark Arum Show. If anyone knows anything concerning Chris Camp, you're welcome to post below. If no one knows anything at all, I understand. That is all. Thank you.

Their "position" is based strictly on money, not agenda. Just like their music choices.
