News out of Boston & Hartford Arbitrends phase II

In the recent Boston trends, the only Providence station to show up is WCTK down .1 from .8 to .7 12+

From Hartford-WEEI-FM shows up and steady at .4 again 12+

I have to wonder what areas included in the Boston market are actually more prone to listen to Providence radio anytime I see Providence stations show even slightly in the Boston books. I suppose I could check the Arbitron website. Given that you have WKLB in Boston vs WCTK in Providence I'm just curious. I'm also wondering when someone on The Cape will at least try country & really localize it to that area. I realize WCTK is a New Bedford station & that at one time WCIB was country so it's been done, but that was years ago & things have changed. It's a format new people discover as opposed to one that listeners abandon.

From the Summer book out of Boston....

WCTK w/ a .8 and WEEI-FM w/ a .4....things that make you go HMMMMMMMMMMMM

"Country" seems to be a very popular format around these parts even though everyone I talk to always says they don't like it. I'm wondering where all these Country lovin folk live? I once dated a girl who lived in FOSTER. That whole town seemed to love country as well as the nearby town of SCITUATE. So perhaps Western Rhode Island is the hotbed for "COUNTRY" music around here. But I don't even know how well they pick up WCTK. I know that Hartford stations can be received in Western Rhode Island and pretty much vanish by the time you head east into Johnston.

Back on subject....I wonder what Ma towns are the ones getting the Boston diary and putting in WCTK and/or WEEI FM.....the .8 for CTK and .4 for EEI FM are pretty profound 12+ because that means there is a demo somewhere HEAVILY noting thier listening to those stations

The areas I can see listening to WCTK in the Boston survey area:
In the Boston metro, Plymouth County & Worcester County
Those in the TSA for the Boston market:
Barnstable County
Bristol County
Dukes County
Nantucket
Kent County
Providence County
Newport County
I don't know the scenario for diary placement for those areas not in the Metro but in the Total Survey Area

Holland might be able to shed a little further light; but I thought if any of those areas that crossed into another diaried market went with the closest market, so I would think the Fall Rive/New Bej would be out as well as the Cape. Again, this is going back many moons ago when we had that nice shiny & runny fax paper.....

For Fall 2007, New Bedford/Fall River Metro & Tsa is Bristol South only.
Cape Cod: Barnstable & Dukes Counties for Metro & Nantucket is added for TSA.

It just gets so complicated & add all that to the fact that any station has the software to eventually show themselves in the best possible light. Then add to that fact that potential advertisers who don't use agencies have to just believe what they're fed. If I were a potential sponsor I'd end up with such a headache I'd just buy Cat Country & HJY in all dayparts, Tad & Brian on Coast, & have Buddy do live reads on WPRO.

Runrigger,

I remember reading here you filled out a diary. And how you also mentioned the average listener would not be happy
filling it in. Because its something you have to stick with. And the average listener would get tired rather quickly.
I've been on The Cape several times. And there are a few stores that have CTK on. And even if nobody wants to admit it. Country music is popular there.

BTW, are you still picking up the greatest hits from the 50's,60;s & 70's in your driveway? Have you been able to locate the source?

Holland,

You are 100 % right when you wrote that the average listener refers to the radio station they listen to by
frequency (e.g 93.7) & people in radio refer to stations using the call letters.

I had a diary about a year & a half ago. I think it's probably a tedious thing to do for most, especially considering we've gotten to the point where most people forgot how to use pens & pencils & really can't function unless they're clicking a mouse or text messaging. I completed it pretty accurately. The only cases where I didn't bother noting a station was where I stopped on one just to hear a song, but didn't really stick around for anything else. I think the PPM will solve a lot of problems even if it creates some new ones. I also think most people establish listening patterns & regardless of who they really listen to, they end up noting who they listen to in general in specific dayparts or hours. I also think Holland is on target when he says if you give listeners something to remember at the end of the day. you'll more than likely be the station that gets the mentions. I'm sure most complete these from memory.

As far as XM in my driveway on 90.7, it comes & goes. It was more prevalent in the summer, but since the signal is also very strong in East Providence I'm betting it's a pirate. Reception in my driveway is strange anyway. If I have it on 93.7 & back up a few feet I get that hip hop station in Hartford, then Mike in Boston as I back out. Since my family & my neighbor's cat object to my living in the driveway I pretty much catch XM on 90.7 when I can.
