NEWS! YUCKO! DON & MIKE! Z-100! WFAN! WNEW!

Can't wait to see YUCKO THE CLOWN (regular guest on HOWARD STERN) on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE (ABC TV) Monday August 8th. Will he bomb?

Look for the official DON & MIKE (ex 102.7 WNEW talkers) Website to be back in normal mode within a week.

The iPod fun starts tomorrow at 1010 WINS...get your NEWS ON DEMAND!

This mornin' NY DAILY NEWS has an article about 100.3 Z-100 WHTZ turning 22 this week. Best PD in their history would have to be SCOTT SHANNON. Current programmer TOM POLEMAN got the station back on track.

Just looked at www.scottshannon.com site. Shannon has a clipping from FMQB. They gave him "Programmer of the Century" award. I'm a Shannon fan but was he the programmer of the century? Z-100 hit the airwaves with no other Top 40 station on the NYC FM dial. PIRATE RADIO in Los Angeles tanked. Per published reports 106.7 WLTW kills 95.5 WPLJ when it comes to ratings and revenue. Shannon worked wonders in DC & Tampa. My vote would go to former 770 WABC programmer RICK SKLAR.

I spoke with a WFAN rep Wednesday and still no official announcement on who gets the overnight gig. I was voting for ANDY GRESH. Is Gresh out of the running? Haven't heard him in two weeks. EVAN ROBERTS getting lots of airtime. IF they gave it to Roberts, that would be ok with me.

Waiting for a WNEW live stream? Keep waiting. With WKTU, WLTW and WPLJ (stations seeking female listeners) streaming WNEW has to get with the program.

INSIDE RADIO mentions ART VUOLO turns 60 on September 30th. Didn't Art produce the classic video of a young HOWARD STERN beggin' to get out of Detroit?

Stern will be on channel 100 when he jumps over to SIRIUS. He will program channels 100, 101 & 102. He tried for ch. 69 but that falls in the music channels area.

Shannon deserves it; i remember Rick Sklar, I got to interview him, and Cousin Brucie in the early 70s, as I graduated high school(yes, I've been around a while)but the success of WABC, fabulous as it indeed was, was as much due to 50,000 watts as it was to Sklar, sorry, but it's the truth,we could barely get WMCA out here in suffolk county, but WABC was clear as a bell, as it was EVERYWHERE, and that was the big, often unmentioned factor in it's overwhelming success. the SIGNAL was OVERWHELMING!

For a guy who claims to be as innovative as he was 10 years ago, his original channel selection carries the stench of the hackiest of hack radio.

Wasn't 95.5 WPLJ or 103.5 WAPP Top 40 before Z hit the air? I think they were both Rock leaning CHRs at the time, or at least one of them was.
Also wasn't 92 KTU still aroud then? What did they sound like before Z hit the air?

You gotta give Scott Shannon major props - he brought back the sound of the "bigger then life" Top 40 station, updating it for the 80s.

WPLJ decided to gradually turn from AOR into a Top 40 station when it got wind that Z100 was going to come to the market. WPLJ was a Top 40 station about a week before Z100 hit the air. Eventhough Z100 went from worst to first, PLJ was always a pretty close second and in one book actually beat Z100. WAPP was AOR and 92 KTU was urban(post disco format) when Z100 hit the air. Both became Top 40 stations not too long after that which led to four Top 40 FMs in New York at the same time. BTW Dan Ingram did PM Drive when 92 KTU was Top 40...

You make some valid points. I was trying to think of others who could claim the award. STEVE RIVERS could be on the short list. Riv programmed classic stations like KMEL, KIIS and KISS 108 BOSTON. Shannon has been at WPLJ since the early '90s and PLJ never hit #1 (12+). Radio insiders will say PLJ doesn't have to win 12+. True, but it would be nice to win 12+ at least once after 14 years at the same station.

Shannon gave us PIRATE RADIO & MOJO RADIO. Both tanked! You have to weigh the good and the bad.

I loved the job Shannon did with Z-100. He gave us great radio. He hired great jocks like Hollywood Hamilton & The Jammer. You have to give him credit for Z-100. He once told me he likes to build a radio station that will be a winner with him or without him (if he departs).
