The discussion of AM versus FM in the spoken word format is interesting but overblown in my humble view. It continues to be my assertion that programming is more vital than AM or FM signal when it comes to generating listeners and the perfect evidence happened this Winter. Conservative radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck had one of their best books ever. In Seattle, Phoenix, LA, wherever you looked they grew 25-54. In Seattle KTTH became the number two station in the market 12+ and during many shifts top 5 25-54. Rush was hot, he was in the news and he did the best radio he has done in years. Just because you are on the FM doesn't guarantee you a win. Phoenix is the best case in point where Rush easily beat the FM News station. I believe that was the case in Seattle this Winter as well, or it was damn close. Rush also beat 80% of the music stations during his shift
The spoken word parameter is driven by content, not signal, in my humble opinion. To think KIRO-FM will do better than KIRO as an AM just because of a frequency shift is folly.
