Nexstar Ends Live Streams of TV Stations’ Newscasts

Note Nexstar owned stations will continue to stream on delay after the live broadcast.

In a statement, Nexstar said the move was being taken "to fulfill our obligations to our cable, satellite and telecom partners."


Instead, the local programming will be available on stations' websites two hours after they are broadcast live over-the-air.


Nexstar said that its stations WGN-TV, Chicago, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, and KRON-TV, San Francisco, will continue to stream local news programming live on their station apps WGN Plus, KTLA Plus and KRON Plus.


The move comes as station groups like Nexstar are trying to grow the retransmission consent fees they collect from distributors as cord-cutting erodes the number of people subscribing to traditional pay-TV services.

In other words, Big Cable/Satellite made them an offer they couldn't refuse? Drop the streaming or say goodbye to us carrying, and paying, you? In the real (non-broadcasting) world, this is called extortion, which last I checked is a criminal offense.

Despite cable/satellite viewership dropping like a rock in the last couple years, I still have a feeling that at least half of the OTA broadcasters today would go out of business without retransmission fees. Apparently, advertising alone doesn't pay the bills anymore. And why don't the networks pay their affiliates like they used to?

What would happen if Nexstar were to give them the middle finger once their current contracts expire?

What do nexstar stations get from Tubi, for example, which streams many stations' newscasts to anyone with internet access free of charge?

is this the newest tactics for companies that own OTA stations to demand more for Cable/Satellite to take all the money in a era where on demand is more popular than live for anything that isn't sports or a breaking news event.

They will be THE ONLY one to do this as LIVE streaming newscasts are the industry standard. NBC, CBS, ABC & Fox O&O stations all their newscasts online SOMEWHERE (Be in on their own individual apps or (In the case of CBS & Fox) on a platform where they're all grouped together)

MANY stations owned by others INCLUDING CW affiliates do this too. What are they going to do about AFFILIATES streaming THEIR newscasts live?? Pull their affiliation?? 🤣😂 Yeah right

Someone should tell Nexstar that...

1). Their plan isn't going to work

2). It's JOURNALISTIC SUICIDE

3). They will lose online viewers EVEN IN THEIR LOCAL AREAS (I'm sure Apollo & Standard would LOVE to have their viewers)

4). It will hurt APP DOWNLOADS (Where Live newscasts are A MUST)

5). They will LOSE Smart TV owners who are APARTMENT DWELLERS who have cut the cord & DEPEND on Smart TV Apps for news because they can;t just stick an outdoor antenna outside )I fall into THIS category)

And that list only civers what I can think of off the top of my head. Care to add to it?? Feel free

Their own statement is a reason to NOT discontinue live streaming

Do they REALLY think (For example) Xfinity cares whether or not the station streams their mewscasts online?? If so, they're eithber get BAD INFORMATION or have entered into BAD AGREEMENTS as companies like Xfinity DO NOT GIVE A RATS ASS because they still carry the stations on (In this case) the Xfinity app

Same goes with Dish Network (Sling TV), DirecTV (DirecTV Now) & the other cable companies & streaming services (Hulu, YouTube TV, etc)

See that's the thing

Breaking News IS NOT "BreakingN news if it's TWO HOURS OLD

By doing this, they're throwing breaking news in the Internet back to the years of the BUSH Adminstration

Once upon a time (??), KWGN's newscasts could be seen on The CW app even though Tribune (And later Nexstar) own it

With Nexstar now in apparent control of The CW, I suppose this will end??

Also, newscasts from the NBC O&O's aren't live on Peacock & Roku unless you happen to live in an area where NBC owns the station

Plus, ABC O&O's (For some strange reason) are THE ONLY one not on a platform that Disney or ABC owns. They're all standalone streams via their own apps

And the Tubi app is BUGGY across all platforms (Usually video freezing while audio keeps on going). for this reason, I don't watch the Fox O&O's anymore

Finally - Don't forget - You can also watch the CBS O&O's on Pluto TV & Paramount+ as well
