Nexstar's ‘News Nation’ gets trounced in election coverage race

https://www.robertfeder.com/2020/11...-nation-gets-trounced-election-coverage-race/

In a week that saw some cable networks and digital sites set viewership records, “News Nation,” the Chicago-based startup launched in September by Nexstar Media Group, barely registered. At the height of Election Night coverage Tuesday, “News Nation” delivered only 95,000 viewers from coast to coast on WGN America. Compare that to 14 million viewers for Fox News, 9.3 million for CNN and 7.5 million for MSNBC. Even WGN-Channel 9, also owned by Nexstar, outdrew “News Nation” with 241,000 viewers — and that was in the Chicago area alone. Adding insult to injury, news/talk WGN 720-AM simulcast “News Nation” audio in lieu of the usual local coverage. It marked the first time in its 96-year history WGN Radio outsourced reporting presidential election returns.

Its gotta be that News Nations segments are used by Nexstar owned stations across the USA and I don't think that many people watch WGN America directly.

One must wonder if this experiment will make it into 2021. The ratings continue to be low. The anchors and style of the show resemble a local newscast, but without anything particularly local about it.

The two main anchors come from KCPQ-TV Seattle/Tacoma (Marni Hughes), and KGW Portland, then local WGN, (Joe Donnely). They do a lot of weather coverage, which simply doesn't work on a national level except for perhaps the Weather Channel. Not sure where they go from this, but my prediction is it won't last.

Thats bad when local wgn has almost double the viewers of a national news program in every major market. How many homes get wgn america and estimated how many get local wgn 9 does anyone know? It would be interesting to compare the two.

It seems that nexstars experiment with turning wgn america into a news channel is failing for the most part. Why do they think people will leave cnn or fox with personalities they know for a random news program it just is beyond me how these execs in programming think. Theyd be better off trying to get the chicago sports contracts to air so many games a season back I think.

They could probably get better ratings running a bad movie like “Speed 2, Cruise Control” than this all over the map format.

They could get better ratings running WGN News at Nine and Noon again. It won't happen, but I'm sure they would get some snowbird viewers in Florida, albeit the Covid pandemic may be preventing some of the snowbird travel. Albeit, the cable news ratings show CNN dropping to Fox News a lot more often now. Fox News will defeat both MSNBC and CNN by at least a million and a half viewers in the overall 2020 ratings (during primetime...which means Tucker, Hannity and Laura are winning bigtime). And the article did not include Newsmax's ratings, but they are starting to become a contender in the conservative race. I think one of their early evening shows beat Fox News at the timeslot recently.
