Next door to the old WKBW radio in Buffalo

Hi,

I spent my childhood listening to K-Big Radio from the mid 60’s through mid-70’s. My Panasonic Panapet went with me everywhere. Beach, backyard, in the car, walking to and from school out in Kenmore/Tonawanda. In the screened-in garage with my friends on rainy days. Trying to make mix tapes on a Webcor reel to reel. Cursing the DJ’s when they talked up the the lyrics. Carly Simon & James Taylor , 3 Dog Night, Paul and Linda, Moody Blues, The Who. The best of times.

In college, I decided I wanted to be a recording engineer. Unfortunately, my college dropped all those classes when I got there. I moved over to TV and started an internship at Ch. 7 in 1978. It was at “The Tabernacle” with radio right next door. Quite the experience, seeing all the famous people, live trucks were brand new. I was there for 1 month before we moved to the new building. I got hired in 1979 and spent the next 30 years there.

I was reading some comments about all the radio people, both on the air and behind the scenes. They all were over at 7 here and there, several engineers moving over from radio, talent showing up for voice overs. I recognized so many names from the past. And when somebody was talking about NABET issues in the control room and Jimmy Adler’s name came up, I knew I had to join. Scuzz was one of my all time favorite people. He said whatever he thought and could diffuse any tension in the control room. So, so funny. I was very sad when I heard he was gone.

I ended up searching for KB radio contests. I was hoping to find details and maybe some bumper stickers. I think it’s too obscure to find anything. But I’m really enjoying the conversations.

Great stories! In addition to the board here, there's a very active Buffalo Broadcasting page on FB with some great posters who share lots of interesting history.

KB Radio memorabilia frequently shows up on eBay. Definitely take a look there.

I remember listening to WKBW in the early 70s from New Jersey at night. Jackson Armstrong (your leeeeeeeader!) was the man!
They certainly don't make 'em like that any more!
