NextMedia puts more jobs on the chopping block

NextMedia is not, and never has been, in Dallas and Chicago..they own FMs in the "Collar Counties" around Chicago, and are laughed at by clients when they try to pry "Chicago Rates" out of advertisers..as far as Dallas is concerned, they own a couple of FMs in the 'burbs..and that's it..

Their San Jose purchase pretty much cleaned out their original credit line several years ago, and was a direct departure from their original premise to recreate the Clear Channel model in small and medium markets..

Its been speculated that NM was offered around 27 million dollars for the Canton Cluster a couple of years ago..I think if somebody would bump it to 35 million, NM would bail in a heartbeat..but I doubt anybody would pay even that for two stations that are about to be overtaken in ratings, and likely already been regarding ad revenue.

I do remember saying "AROUND" Dallas and Chicago. Besides that, I agree. If the price is right, Nextmedia is out.

WHBC A/F when they bought the stations were a one of a kind combo in a market that was very uncompetitive at the time. CC didnt have any in-market stations, the only competition was Donnie and Cumulus.

Now Canton is much more competitive with 2 extra radio stations. WHBC still serves as the markets top biller, and probably will be for quite sometime. Its a heritage thing. Thats one thing that Nextmedia hasnt screwed up too badly.

I had heard that figure thrown around, and I think in the coming year, that offer may come back at 25 million. Nextmedia may just have to swallow their pride on this and sell. It sure will be interesting if its Donnie knocking at the door again. With the investors he has backing him on this signal, they really could have a great cluster.

Word on the street is the power struggle between WHBC wannabe PD HUNTER and Steven Davis may have Hunter exiting soon. Rumor has it former CBS Cleveland AC WDOK/102.1 "Soft Rock 102.1" Cleveland program director Scott Miller is all but ready to take the reigns.

I don't want to be the "expletive for penis", but really...high school football is actually a draw to this station??
Why is everyone always so mad at cutbacks?? IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME! And NOBODY is let go for NOTHING. Even if it's merely that the people are too old, there is always a reason. There are people who only work because of the people they know (IE: wmms overnights/wncx mornings) and they will never have the "where did this come from" firing, no matter how much they suck...so it's not just to save a penny. They say this to people who have just stopped improving and started to take their gig for granted. Really, who is dumb enough to say "hey, let's take out our big, locally famous sports guy and replace him with no-talent part timers". Doing this just states that "we think the part timers can do equally as good, if not better, than our current full timer".
If it was a money thing, why wouldn't the company give the ultimatum of a pay cut or job loss?? And if they DO, then the morons who refuse don't deserve pity. Especially in white trash, small market, "high school football is our biggest sport when NASCAR is on vacation" kinda towns.

I love you.. :-*

Do you know anything about Canton/Massillon and how big high school football is there? Massillon plays it's games at the Pro Football HOF, which seats I believe about 28,000 -and they fill it! It's "Chris Spielman Country". Football in that area of Ohio is arguably as big as h/s football in Cleveland (which is big) and even Texas where towns shut down to go to a game.

Has nothing to do with white trash. That's an ignorant statement.

NASCAR on radio is not popular. One there is a substantial affiliate fee to pay. Which means sales has to make that $$$ back before a profit can be turned. Secondly, NASCAR is a TV sport. I had NASCAR on an AM I programmed. It did nothing for the bottom line or ratings.

And yes budget cuts do exist. Yes the high profile talent get cut not b/c they take the gig for granted but b/c they make too much. If sales are hurting a station can't carry overhead like a high salary. It's all numbers. Pay cuts more often than not create negative feelings between the employee and employer often resulting in bad blood and decreased productivity. Most radio employers just cut.

In all sincerity get a job in radio and then perhaps you'll understand better how things work.

Actually, Massillon plays their games at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, which is right behind Washington High School. WTIG-AM 990 broadcasts every game, and usually replays them the morning after in their entirety.

McKinley, Timken, and GlenOak play at Fawcett. I believe GlenOak is building themselves a new stadium behind their Taj Mahal of education on Schneider Rd. though.

WHBC is no longer exlcusive rights holder for Federal League games this year. Is WCER going after that contract?

I stand corrected on who plays where but you get my drift.

I was just trying to say that it's common in the biz, and not to assume that the people didn't deserve it.

I love you :-*

Yeah, Hunter's gone. Sent to the beach Tuesday night. Nastily discuss.

Wonderful. Hunter appears to be just the latest casualty of NextMedia's "i want it all now" mentality, in regards to ratings and sales. How long can this kind of thinking go on at WHBC before everything comes to a screeching halt? Has it already happened?

It's just my opinion, but if NM hadn't panicked when 101.7 came to town or had made a few minor changes to the old Mix format, I'm sure they wouldn't be in this situation. After all, everyone knew WHOF was signing on well ahead of time. In other words, it's a textbook example of failing to plan. I don't suppose the architects of this trainwreck will find their jobs in jeopardy anytime soon, unlike Hunter.
This is a crazy business, no?

So who actually gets the P-D antlers next? Given that there are scores of people on the beach currently, that's not much of an issue..but would you want to walk into that mess?

Were there advances already out that showed the book was going to be a repeat of the Spring 2008 numbers?

Who gets afternoon drive in the interim? Does Mix have any P-Ts left?

Will "Kayliegh Kriss" have to, God Forbid, have to put an extra hour or two in her day to keep the place humming?

With the Pro Football HOF Festival just weeks away, this was a strange time to cut the PD loose..but then, this is NextMedia we're taking about..

When are the guys in Denver going to realize that maybe, if fortune smiles upon them, that 35 million might...MIGHT..be the best price they're ever going to get for the combo, and just let someone else clean up the mess?

Better yet, here's an even more radical suggestion..why not just simulcast the AM format on 94.1? Seriously, what is the FM side worth to NextMedia now? Cut your losses, cut your costs, and move on..

I say let Rubber City or Donnie by the combo. Either way, they could do a better job with it than the folks in Denver right about now

Rubber City would be a great choice...during the Fall when the Browns, Cavs, Indians, Ohio State and Local sports are playing and they can't squeeze everything onto WAKR, they would be able to split the sports scene and place some of it on 1480 AM, and perhaps fix 94.1 FM with a great oldies format sort of what is on WAKR today (lost classic songs you haven't heard for awhile)---but in stereo, and that way when WAKR has to drop the music for a sports game- the oldies can continue on their new FM station...WAKR already carries Dick Bartley's great Rock and Roll show on Saturday evenings...this could also be moved over to WHBC AM and perhaps place more live talent during the week days from our past, and more great syndicated oldies on the weekends---just my thoughts on how those two stations can be saved...

Two questions:

1. Why does everyone insist on living in the past?

2. What did Kayleigh Kriss ever do to Speaker of Truth that he's gotta find a way to rag on her in each post?

Just asking. Nicely. A rarity on these boards, I know, but still........

Ed is 100% right. I think "SOT" is a very disgruntled ex-employee of NextMedia. Getting back into radio is tough, and his new job of sending viagra e-mails to people must be wearing on his nerves. Hey people, it is radio. I doubt that NM, CCU, Rubber City, or "Donnie" for that matter makes changes for the sake of change. Does anyone know what prompted this decision? Is it a cost cutting move, or is Hunter being replaced? Did the Speaker pitch the job? I think both of NM's stations sound great. Everyone questioned putting on an "untested" Ron Ponder, and I am hearing his show everywhere I go. "SOT", why don't you call Denver and offer 35 million and see what they say? I am sure your new Viagra business is doing well!

Hunter has been removed from the DJ's and On-Air Now portion of the MIX website. His blog remains linked however. Anyone know what's up?

According to All Access, former WAKZ Youngstown PD Jerry Mac is returning to the area from NextMedia in North Carolina to take the PD/afternoon role at HBC .
