NFL on Fox play-caller Thom Brenneman fired for anti-gay slur

The slur occurred as he did his other job as play-caller for the Cincinnati Reds. He uttered the term "f*g city" (city unknown) when he didn't know his mic was on. He apologized on-air, although he did call a home run in the middle of it, and left the booth. He was immediately suspended by the Reds, but has not yet been fired by them.

But the honchos at Fox fired him this morning.

Two lessons learned:

Always assume the mic is open.

Don't ever reveal who you really are - someone is sure to find fault with it.

Did Fox fire him or just suspend him for the season.

Maybe ESPN hires him.

Given his father's long association with the Cincinnati Reds, he'd be more likely to return in the radio booth for the team in a few years, after proper public and private penitence. I don't think Disney would want anything to do with him right now.

Well, if ESPN can keep rehiring the unhinged Keith Olbermann, there may be room for Brenneman.

You can offend conservatives all you want if you work for Disney, just as you can offend liberals all you want if you work for Fox. Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't all of Olbermann's firings/resignations been brought on by Olbermann's lashing out at management, not any comment that's crossed the line on race, sexuality, gender, disabilities, speech impediments and such?

Olbermann's issues were still doing something after management told him not too. ESPN has a no politics on social media policy. He constantly broke that rule.

Maybe I'm wrong, but usually after the heat dies down, a lot of these folks come back in some way. A lot of folks thought Marv Albert's career was done after his kinky affair was publicized. He was off for a bit, but came back. David Letterman even invited him back. I'm sure people will look at them differently, but that's about it.

Depends if more stuff starts to surface about him. Maybe he will be back in a year.

You are right, a lot of folks thought his career was done after that weird episode. But I think Albert's case is different because it was a personal matter, not some indication of bigotry.

Brenneman's situation is very different because it was a candid moment that many believe revealed a personal bigotry that he did not express publicly.
The problem for him is that the Reds and Fox would be innundated with negative PR, suggesting they are homophobic, if they continued to employ him or have him call games. Advertiser boycotts and all manner of other thigns would likely ensue if they did nothing. Suspending him now puts a pause on those protests because they did something about it.

Brenneman will next have to do work to repair his image if he ever wants to get back to work. I would imagine he and his agent have already contacted someone at a crisis PR firm to start working on this process. He'll have to show some kind of commitment to LGBTQ causes and appropriate contrition before he can return to working games without angry protests.

It will take a long time though for him to fix this. I suspect the Reds will move on from him and hire someone as a replacement for next season.

However, if past incidents are any indication, Fox will never let him on the air again. They apparently have a strict policy on issues like this. Several years ago ESPN commentator Craig James resigned to ran for the U.S. Senate in Texas. During various debates he said he was opposed to gay marriage. That was far from a controversial opinion at the time. However, a year or two later, Fox Sports Southwest hired him to do studio work on their college football games. Fox corporate flipped out and had him fired after one week on the air. One of their spokemen told the Dallas Morning News that James' statement on gay marriage was the reason. He sued over the incident (https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...es-files-lawsuit-against-fox-sports/31068235/ ) I'm not sure it has ever been resolved. But given this incident, it seems unlikely Brenneman will ever work there again.

Part of the reason he may never announce again is that although he is a good announcer, nobody has ever tuned into a game to listen to him. He adds no value other than being a solid announcer, and there are lots of good announcers out there. He is not worth the PR headache.

That's why I'd bet on Reds radio as a soft landing spot for him. He'd be working for WLW radio with the approval of the Reds rather than for a network. Cincinnati is a conservative city, Thom's dad is a legend there. There's no place more likely to forgive and forget. Of course, this all depends on WLW or the Reds having reason to dump one of its current radio voices or wanting to add a third man to the crew.

Maybe not in Cincinnati, but he was quite popular in Phoenix. He had it made with the Diamondbacks, but he wanted to work with his dad.

Yeah dont think he is gonna be announcing for the diamondbacks any time soon and then he gives this half ass fake apology on air saying he is sorry for the embarrassment he may have caused to the people that sign his paychecks that is literally what he said yeah this guy is a creep and i hope that he doesnt ever have a job in media again good riddance mr. Brennaman.
