Maybe I'm wrong, but usually after the heat dies down, a lot of these folks come back in some way. A lot of folks thought Marv Albert's career was done after his kinky affair was publicized. He was off for a bit, but came back. David Letterman even invited him back. I'm sure people will look at them differently, but that's about it.
You are right, a lot of folks thought his career was done after that weird episode. But I think Albert's case is different because it was a personal matter, not some indication of bigotry.
Brenneman's situation is very different because it was a candid moment that many believe revealed a personal bigotry that he did not express publicly.
The problem for him is that the Reds and Fox would be innundated with negative PR, suggesting they are homophobic, if they continued to employ him or have him call games. Advertiser boycotts and all manner of other thigns would likely ensue if they did nothing. Suspending him now puts a pause on those protests because they did something about it.
Brenneman will next have to do work to repair his image if he ever wants to get back to work. I would imagine he and his agent have already contacted someone at a crisis PR firm to start working on this process. He'll have to show some kind of commitment to LGBTQ causes and appropriate contrition before he can return to working games without angry protests.
It will take a long time though for him to fix this. I suspect the Reds will move on from him and hire someone as a replacement for next season.
However, if past incidents are any indication, Fox will never let him on the air again. They apparently have a strict policy on issues like this. Several years ago ESPN commentator Craig James resigned to ran for the U.S. Senate in Texas. During various debates he said he was opposed to gay marriage. That was far from a controversial opinion at the time. However, a year or two later, Fox Sports Southwest hired him to do studio work on their college football games. Fox corporate flipped out and had him fired after one week on the air. One of their spokemen told the Dallas Morning News that James' statement on gay marriage was the reason. He sued over the incident (
