NJ College Radio Shock Jocks Show Cancelled, School Investigating

A couple of self described "shock jocks" at New Jersey's Montclair State University's WMSC 90.3 FM have had their show taken off the air.

According to the Bergen Record , the university has started an investigation into a February student radio broadcast that apparently included naked women, lap dancing and other sex acts.

However, in a followup story on the newspaper's website the two shock jocks deny there were any sex acts or nudity on the show they called "The Kinky Olympics." They claim the woman involved was a co-host and that she is an exotic dancer who is of legal age.

The show is being moved to a web podcast.

The university says it will review past shows to see if the station is in violation of any FCC regulations.
The FCC says the station could face fines if something said on-air was found to be "indecent."

Howard Stern wannabes, no doubt.
no doubt anyone can be a shock jox with out being compared to stern. I would love to hear college shock radio.

This makes me sick...even college radio has rules now. I had a ridiculous "bad taste "show on 91.5 WDBK New Jersey for 2 years before I was suspended and then came back with a tamer but still entertaining show. I still think about that show that was possible because it was completely student ran and never tried to be like commercial radio. Its just terrible...where can young talent develop???Overnights are automated just about everywhere and now college radio is monitered by the colleges. Stations are programmed...what a joke the jocks can talk 4 times an hour in some cases and usually can't pick there own songs even if they fit in the format.I guess the last ounce of creativity even has to be pulled out of college radio.

College's can be put in a quandry over edgy programming. Not even all professionals know where to draw the line. For every student that either knows, somehow senses where to draw the line, or is open enough to ask the Faculty Advisor(s) before going on-air, you'll find a number of other people who aren't/won't. They can get themselves, the station and maybe even the institution into trouble. The reason to be open about proposed programming is to get a sense of where the station's management is on the program. From the Faculty representative(s) you can get a sense of where the college's Administration will stand. Will they defend someone or throw them "under the bus"? By running edgy ideas "up the flagpole" so-to-speak, you increase your chances of remaining on-air and avoid embarrassing incidents. Most college stations, even though student-run, are owned by the College and they will likely be the first to get hammered. With ownership comes responsibility.
Additionally, the Administration may become concerned about how all of this fits into the educational mission of the institution.
