September’s M/S/U ratings plunged some more for Millennium’s flagship NJ101.5 WKXW FM radio and it shouldn’t come as a complete shock to the legions of dedicated MedianJ readers. As we’ve been discussing since Walter Sabo was unceremoniously and unwisely let go the talk hosts are NOT following the proven format as we’ve been pointing out much to the dismay of the now discredited Millennium rah rah team. The hosts continue to discuss too many non - Jersey topics and aren’t taking enough calls. Why can’t management just simply get them to follow the proven format that could stop this terrible ratings plunge? One should question if they’re weak, lazy, incompetent or all of the above? After all Millennium this year also had their important Moody’s ratings withdrawn. http://v3.moodys.com/Pages/default.aspx
It also doesn’t help when you have the worst afternoon drive show (Casey and Rossi) in the over twenty year history of NJ101.5. Casey has a terrible voice and personality who annoyingly laughs at himself repeatedly. When combined with the lack of chemistry between the two hosts it makes for one poor PM drive show.
Dennis Malloy continues to bring up national politics which is a proven turn off to the prized female audience you’re trying to keep. In a recent random listen Dennis brought up Delaware’s Christine O’Donnell, this is a Jersey centric radio station, TALK Jersey and you win automatically! The hosts also continue with the inside radio station chatter which in this new PPM world is a definite no no. There should be no extraneous talk by the hosts about call screeners or any other station personal, the audience has a short attention span and just doesn’t care about it. They will tune out as shown by this ratings plunge with the PPM instantaneously sensing the station change. Get to the Jersey topic and put many short calls on the air very quickly, what’s so difficult to manage that?
How can anyone defend these embarrassing ratings for NJ101.5 in the highly populated and very lucrative M/S/U? It will be laughable to see anyone try. I expect some to name call me and attempt to shift blame and attention elsewhere but they have no one to blame for this poor and dismal ratings slide in M/S/U but themselves.
1. How much longer will Millennium NJ101.5 WKXW have weak PD Eric Johnson at the helm of this fast sinking ratings ship?
2. A Millennium talk host called their consultant worthless and spineless which indicates a lack of loyalty and respect, hence the September ratings plunge.
3. NJ101.5 fell out of the top 5 coming in at six place losing to numerous out of state New York radio stations in their own M/S/U backyard- SHOCKING!
4. How will they correct this? Put a good PD like Joe Kelly in there? Joe Kelly did recently raise SoJo’s ratings. Replace talk hosts and hire Deminski and Doyle?
5. Get a stronger competent management team in place there very quickly?
6. Will a new management team actually listen closely to the on air content and be strong enough to suspend without pay any talk host who ignores the format?
7. In the sports world changes would have occurred already. Do they want to play to win or just keep sliding down? Any good consultant will advise that higher ratings will result in more revenue, that’s what the radio business is all about, you strive to win, not play to lose especially to many NY radio stations like NJ101.5 is doing!
Conclusion, weak management + weak hosts = continued embarrassing ratings slide.
The shining star of NJ101.5 Eric Scott shouldn’t be on the same station with these inferior - hosts and weak management, it’s bad for the Eric Scott brand and image which potentially is worth millions a year if he decides to pursue more prestigious and lucrative positions in network television.
When you open the link below the list of stations will be in alphabetical order, to get the station rankings click twice on Est on the top line. To get cume ranking double click on cume, NJ101.5’s cume is now a pathetic 8th place in their own backyard, SHOCKING!
