No antenna, but still a tower, and 'radioactive': BREN tower demolished (VIDEO)

Thanks for the link, richard. I read the story first and then was puzzled as it fell and then they showed some of the guy wires; so I re-read the story....

Anywho, it's impossible to trust journalists these days.

Standing at over 1500 feet, the BREN Tower was the tallest free-standing structure west of the Mississippi. It also became one of the best-known landmarks in the Jackass Flats, part of the Nevada test site.

"It once had a working two-man elevator that launched riders to the top at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour."

Heh... I'm not quite sure I believe that one either.

Assuming that the elevator has instantaneous acceleration//deceleration; why would they need to travel the whole length in 10 seconds?

Oh wait, this was government money being spent.. ::)

WOW... I grew up in rural Nevada, no too far from the test site. We actually took school field trips to the test site and we got to see THAT EXACT TOWER. They showed us cars that they nuked and old trees they had setup and nuked for testing. We even got to see craters from underground nuclear testing. Very sad to see the tower go. :'(

We also toured the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository. We rode a little train down inside and got to see where they planned to store all the nuclear waste. We had some very odd field trips as a kid, but hey it's Rural Nevada.

According to Wikipedia, the elevator went 100 feet per minute, or roughly 1 mile per hour.

I believe it's the tower that's visible in GoogleEarth:

36°46'50.29" N 116°14'36.67" W

I couldn't find an ASRN for it.
