No Browns on radio in Dayton for 2013 season

The Browns released their affiliate list yesterday and there is no Dayton affiliate that is listed. Can't believe 1410 or maybe even Cox with 95.7/1290 or 95.3 wouldn't want to have Browns games. I am so disappointed. Sometimes the radio was the only way to get the Browns games here in Dayton.

See the Dish/Fox 19 thread (on page 2). The comments there will put you in the right direction when it comes to purchasing an outdoor antenna, specifically an Antennas Direct 91 XG.

From everything I've read, with the Antennas Direct 91XG picking up WBNS in Columbus on a reliable basis from Dayton should be pretty much a snap. Columbus stations always choose the Browns over the Bengals whenever there's a conflict.

EDIT: A gentleman on one of the HDTV forums who goes by the handle "tigerbangs", claims he once set up his sister in Centerville with an outdoor antenna and she could reliably watch WSYX in Columbus when it was on VHF 13. You might want to do a Google search to see if you can find that post, if you are interested in receiving any of the VHF stations from Indy. He knows what he's talking about.

What Columbus are you living in? WBNS does not always choose the Browns over the Bungles. I can't even tell you how many times 10TV pissed me off and I ended up having to go to a bar to watch the game. This season there does seem to be a few less conflicting dates but don't just assume that WBNS will always show the Browns because that's simply not the case.

God knows that listening to the low I.Q. Fox Sports crew will be so much more entertaining than a Browns game. Pardon me while I remove my tongue, which was firmly planted in my cheek. Couldn't Radio One make money carrying the state's heritage football team? Or is the possibility of actually reaching above a 1 share on a Sunday too frightening to contemplate?

That's not exactly fair. The Browns have sucked for a long time, and the Bengals have been respectable of late. Traditionally, however, WBNS picks the Browns over the Bengals. Columbus has always been a Browns city, and there are far more expats from Northeast Ohio then there are from SW Ohio. Lots of people from Youngstown, Pittsburgh and Eastern Ohio, too. That's why the Steelers get some radio and TV time.

Now back to the original subject, I found the post describing what "tigerbangs" installed at his sister's house for VHF DX reception (the 91XG is for UHF):

My sister lives in Centerville, near Dayton, and I installed a Wade-Delhi VU-936SR without a preamp at her house, and she picks up WSYX-DT just fine and she's quite a bit further than you are from their signal!

Yeah, 1410 would be an option with Mainline owning them now. I had a thought that if Cox bought rights they could put them on one of three stations. Either 95.7/1290 and if they conflict with the Flyers, which would be rare, then just put them on 1290. Also they could put them on 95.3 The Eagle if they wanted to give that station a boost. Too bad the Browns won't be on in Dayton this season. So annoyed.

Not having a Dayton radio station carrying the Browns also shuts out all of Southwestern Ohio from hearing their games. TV is fine (and I can get the Browns' games via satellite at my house), but there are times when you are away from the TV (in the car, out in the yard, in another part of the house, etc.) when being able to hear them on the radio is very helpful. It also doesn't help that the AM outlet for the Browns in Cleveland is now a station you can not receive here. When WTAM was the Cleveland AM outlet, you could pick it up at night and even beginning in late afternoons in the late fall.

Any idea(s) on who with the Browns might be contacted to have them try and get an affiliate for their network in this area?

WKNR 850 AM at 50,000 watts daytime should get to Dayton better than WTAM 1100 AM unless they have a weird pattern or if there are adjacent channels messing with the signal.

WKNR's signal downgrades to only 4,700 watts at nighttime, which will hurt when the Browns play either a late afternoon game or a nationally televised night game. WTAM is 50,000 day and night.

I have actually been wondering if there is someone we can contact about it but I am not sure where to start

As you get into Southwestern Ohio, WHAS - 840-AM - from Louisville, Ky. with 50,000 watts can make it harder to receive anything on 850-AM.

Stations cannot be "split" like that and still be considered a "simulcast" by Arbitron. Splitting the stations...even one time...would result in both WHIO AM and FM to be listed separately in the book, which would create too many issues for a sales department.

In the 1970's, WHIO Radio 1290-AM was on the Browns Radio Network. In those days, they were also carrying the Reds' games from their network so most of the Browns' games that they aired came after the Reds season was completed. Interestingly, WHIO-TV, Channel 7, is listed in today's Cincinnati Enquirer as carrying tonight's Browns-Rams pre-season game.

I haven't seen the most-recent listing of the affiliates on this year's Browns' Radio Network and am wondering which is the closet one to Southwestern Ohio?

Might be the Columbus affiliate

95.5 from Columbus (actually the transmitter is in Lancaster, about 30 miles SE of Columbus) makes it about as far west as the Greene-Fayette county line before 95.3 starts to take over. It can probably be heard weakly in Springfield. North of Piqua, 94.3 out of Celina is carrying Browns games and it might be serviceable for at least some of the Miami Valley.

If you live north of town maybe but for Dayton and south it's easy to hear it at all.

Ah I see, didn't understand that. Just wish Cox could do it since it's obvious Mainline won't put Browns on their stations.

I would imagine SOME Browns affiliates stream on-line.... There's your solution.

They might but it's on a serious delay so it's not worth it to me

What? 7 Seconds? 12 Seconds? 20 Seconds?

Heck, I have tuned around the AM/FM bands and heard the SAME game on different affiliates, all with the game airing at slightly different times depending on each station's delay system.
