No Flip AND 100.3 WNOX Now promoting new TALK morning show on FM!

Coming home from work yesterday afternoon a bit after 5 and hit my 100.3 preset to see whats going on ,like most of us I'm sure, and heard "you dropped the bomb on me" and felt like I was back in the 80's again livng in South East Ky. The quality was super! It was like the 100.3 WOKI of long ago. (be nice to have an old Brother John Aircheck to throw in the mix while they're stunting huh?) Good to hear. What ever music format they decide to go with, the frequency will once again be a high-quality flamethrower. Not only locally but in the 5-6 states that it covers.

Yeah, I grew up on 'OKI back then as well. I wonder where Roy Jaynes (aka "Brother John St. John) is now? He was in Albuquerque, Chattanooga, & IN, over the years after 'OKI. He also did a short stint at 105.3 here in Knox during their 80s format a few years ago. Journal should bring him back into town if they do that classic hits format on 93.1. It'd be a great fit.

Ok, I'm digging this early 90's rhythmic CHR format they're stunting with right now. Can we just leave it this way. Lol! I've heard JJ Fad, LL Cooll J, Londonbeat, Marky Mark, Paula Abdul:) Sounds like where 100.3 left off when they abandoned CHR in the early 90's. Fun stuff!

I wish they would bring back Brother Clay , now HE was the best DJ at the old OKI!

Brother Clay is a woman now, so that might be a little awkward.

I remember Roy from KZBS in Oklahoma City. I think he left KZBS for Albuquerque and went to Chattanooga after that. He was at WYIL Wild 98.7 right after it signed on. I think he went to WSOY in Decatur, IL after that. Not sure where he is now, but I don't think he's at WSOY anymore.

Say it is not so. He had a face for Radio as they say! Sister Clay?

A lot of people talk about something and some people take the chance and do it.

A lot of Pirkle bashing has gone on here but let's reflect on what Johnny did. Against all odds a young DJ with no money saw an opportunity to apply for and get a full power Class C FM license. He built at the full height possible in 1974 and maximum power when all the other smart people in the business were just simulcast their AM station or giving the license back to the FCC. I was living in Atlanta at the time and I could pick up 100.3 in Georgia and listen to it for 5 hours driving home to visit parents. No other FM frequency in the south was programming a stand alone FM like that.

He staked out his territory early and when 80-90 came into play with the proliferation with rim shot FM he was not hurt like many holders of Class C that had not maximized their facilities. 100.3 arguably has one of the best signals on the east coast.

Pirkle has operated, LMA and now sold the station for a lot of money over the years and it sounds to me a lot of the bashing is envy. He didn't spending his time blogging and second guessing but he actually did something in broadcasting and for his family. He gave a lot people jobs that moved up in the business. We should all be happy for him this day. Good job Johnny.

Very good points BillBattle. But so goes the age of the message boards... people criticize and shoot down people who actually got off their butt and accomplished things simply because they did not... and they bravely fire their shots using fake screen names. It is amazing how wise people are who have NOT had to make payroll for three decades with a radio station and how stupid [we are told] a person is that actually did it.

Hats off JP. Thank you for contributing your life to Knoxville broadcasting.

I suppose some of the above remarks were aimed at some of my postings. Yes it easy to post, but if I am reading the JP & Dick legal part of this thread correctly, the Dick's will end up with a judgement and JP's money. I hope not!

IIRC: Part of the reason the 100.3 LMA to the Dicks was to protect 107.7.

IMHO: Music stations are cheaper to operate even with the music royalties than news talk. Pirkle would have been $mart to have gone Country.

To be honest, secondchoice, my reply was done without you specifically in mind. But more of a general assessment of the arm chair quarterbacks that second guess radio pioneers like Johnny every chance they get. It just seems odd that there are people with $50 in their bank account (again, speaking generally) and they talk about how awful and stupid people are that have made millions... and as if their financial success was just pure luck and has nothing to do with their work ethic and decades of sacrifices. Sure, we can lob doo-doo at the big time radio operators once they make it big... but where were we when they took out second mortgages on their homes to make payroll, lived in their cars in the parking lot of the radio station, or when they took other enormous risks to keep a little piece of the radio industry alive?

As far as operating costs, my news talk station costs me 1/3 what my music station costs me to operate. It all depends on how you operate it. More importantly, a critical factor is your sales force and how they can compete in the marketplace.

When you make the assessment that country would've been the clear better choice than continuing news/talk on 100.3, you are making that assessment based on May 6, 2013 information... the luxury of knowing now what you did not know when Oak Ridge FM took the station back over. When the lease was terminated, there were several factors to look at, a biggie included keeping some of agency dollars on 100.3. Both news/talk and country were fine options, both with their own risks and opportunities. Do you stay with news/talk, keep some agency $$$ and be the 100,000 watt talker against a 8,000 watt talker? Or, do you go country? A rimshot 100,000 watter against the heritage 100,000 watter, start with $0 in revenue and hope for the best? I probably would've gone with JP's choice at the time... and this is coming from a child of I-100 and an alumnus of HitKicker country days of 100.3 WOKI.

Now it is 2013, WIVK has slipped to #2, 25-54 for the first time in a very very long time, morale is a wreck. Journal has the staff and connections (and now a signal) to put up a serious threat to WIVK. It is a very different playing field.

IMHO when Citadel was bankruptcy was the perfect time to strike.

In bankruptcy every expenditure has to OKed by the Judge. Usually they give a rubber stamp for "normal" stuff, but something extra like advertising campaign could be a tough sell. Now Cumulus has a little cash and could spend some it to save 107.7.

I guess if you barter you can run talk cheaply. Is Rush bater? Many music stations voice track and save $$ too. Hopefully you "need" announcers for commercial production in either format.

No Rush is not barter you pay big dollars for Rush and give up a big piece of time for barter too. Also it has hard for a single station operator to get Rush to move to your station because Citadel or Cumulus has Rush in other markets and can leverage those stations to keep it on 98.7.

Right after midnight Sunday night/Monday morning 100.3 ran a statement saying (in so many words) that at 9 am Thursday there will be a new format introduced at 100.3, "But what will it be?" No doubt the playing of many different formats is stunting but I think it's a pretty neat way of teasing the audience.

Roy now owns WLEL Ellaville-Americus, Ga. Plays everything from the 50's to the 2K's. Pretty bizarre.

Also, years ago, Jaynes was involved in a lawsuit with now conservative talk host Todd "MJ" Schnitt. Schnitt was recently involved in another lawsuit with Bubba The Love Sponge, and here's some remarks Jaynes (aka Brother John), had to say about him. http://www.wtsp.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=294813

I'm pretty sure 1040 changed formats a few months ago. From what I heard, it was running classic country and old WKTI 1040 liners. So, I'd guess the automation equipment they used for WKTI 1040 is what they were using for the stunt (and probably what they'll be using for 93.1), and they probably just hadn't cleaned all the music and liners out.
