No more originals at TBS and TNT (for now…)

Interesting. While I wasn't a fan of any of their recent stuff, there's just so much competition out there, including from paid streaming services that I can understand why they put the brakes on original series which can be expensive to create and produce. I can't recall the last time I heard someone boasting about an original series on a network like TBS or TNT, but I do often hear co-workers and friends asking each outher "Hey, what series are you currently streaming, and where?" When people mention the series' they're most excited about, it's usually something from Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max and the like.

It seems that TBS and TNT are phasing out scripted originals, but that doesn't mean that they won't continue with reality stuff that is cheaper to produce. It's interesting how quickly basic cable has gone from being a real competitor with the broadcast networks for scripted originals to essentially getting squeezed out of that business. The broadcast networks seem to be hanging in because what they produce is so different from the scripted shows on streaming services.

yes some of this is in relation to Warner's Discovery deal but in an overall sense Warner Media has been focusing on boosting subscribers to HBO Max. I can see some of the cancelled scripted shows or rejected proposed shows moving from TNT and TBS as "HBO Max Exclusives"

Honestly outside of sports is there much of a point to cable these days? As Mikey pointed out above all the "buzz shows" are on streaming these days, leaving cable mostly musty reruns and reality shows. And the people who want just background noise will stick with OTA and free streamers like Tubi, saving themselves a lot of money in the process.

FX and Showtime are the only ones with "Buzz Shows" on cable for now but FX the cable network is a label within Hulu app along with ABC these Disney owned labels are within Hulu app.

In Showtimes case they were originally known as a pay TV network but that's now a label within the Paramount+ app.
