No more Rock of the 80s in Palm Springs

Yes, KRCK 97.7 has dumped 80s rock for CHR/Pop. Will target listeners of KSPI 100.5(Hot AC) and U92(Hip Hop/R&B).

Good or bad move for PS?<P ID="signature">______________

This station is owned by Ed Stolz (KWOD Royce International fame) and is licensed to one of the towns way out on the Salton Sea (Mecca), and covers the PS market rather inadequately, especially from Palm Desert to Palm Springs. The transmitter is off the 10 on the grade up to Desert Crossing, waaaaaay outside the market.

The 70 dbu does not even reach Indio... so for all practical purposes, it is a Coachella station... or Coachella and Indio. If the focus is 100% Hispanic, they might do OK, as those two cities are almost 100% Hispanic.

Meaning that unless it is leans Rhythmic, even a CHR won't work on that signal. Even I, who personally love "Rock of the 80's", wondered how it could possibly work on a signal that can't reach Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage.

I know this isn't perfect, but here is the Radio-Locator map:
http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KRCK&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

Note that the red (local) contour is all at the south end of the market, as David said. Trying to hear KRCK in Palm Springs is going to be like trying to listen to Indie in the San Fernando Valley; if receivable, it's going to be scratchy with the stereo pilot coming and going.

But then, Ed Stolz has tilted at windmills most of his life.

It actually comes in good here in Palm Springs on car radios. Reception is also fine in the north end of Palm Springs on boom-boxes. They also have a translator (25watts) on 95.5 in Palm Desert where the studios are located. Due to an award of 95.5 as a class A for Indian Wells in the last FM auction, they have applied for a booster of 18 watts on 97.7 in Palm Desert as they will be forced to vacate 95.5 when Art Rivkin, part owner of KPLM/KJJZ puts it on. Most likely that will be soon as he has the big bucks. He shelled out $6,657,000 for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the ONLY station on the air that Ed Stolz has?

What's the deal with KIEV? and also KIOQ, which is *nowhere* to be found except for some obscure old FCC documents.

Right you are. KRCK is Ed's only remaining station. 1500am in the L.A market has a number of new applications pending. He has filed an appeal but it will be denied. Considering the primary contour of the 97.7 signal, I think a KXOL type format would be best on it.

Search the LA Times story from the weekend (if you have access) that shows how KXOL is tanking and quesitons the format in Mexican based markets. That audience group is already served in the desert by U 92.7

The article is on the Calendar Live website, not the main Times site.

Sure doesn't look good for SBS. I wonder what they will try on 96.3 next ...

Maybe if they kill the English and go Spanglish, and nuke the r&b and hip hop stiffs, they woud do better.

Latino 96.3

Do you think SBS is smart enough to think to do that? Look how many attempts they made to salvage "El Sol" before flipping last year ...

I get the impression form MediaBase that they have a clue about the music. They lost a bunch of the r&b, which has little appeal to reggaeton listeners.

Actually, Desert Crossing does exist. It is the Big Box shopping center on the 111 a half-mile from Westfield Mall in Palm Desert. And that is what I confused the name with. I spend a lot more time there than at Desert Center, which is an "enter-only-if-desparate" gas stop at the top of the grade out of the Coachella Valley.
