No news on WCBS and WINS this morning!

And why the political reference? Perhaps the mental health show should have addressed TDS, an increasingly serious issue related to anger management in today’s society.

Each licensee's responsibility is to find the significant community needs and concerns and to create programming that addresses them. It is up to the licensee to decide which issues it will address, though.

Entercom decided that suicide and suicide prevention were two concerns, and focused the whole company there. That is their right and their duty.

Maybe they will do a follow-up show. Maybe they will do, eventually, a show about another issue. That's up to them, but good for Entercom for doing it at all on over 400 stations!

Let me explain. The political reference I referred to was a swipe at President Trump:

You're trying to double, or triple-down on this like someone on TV uses a Sharpie(tm) to prove their point with a (badly) modified weather map.

TDS stands for "Trump Derangement Syndrome," the obsessive need to express hatred toward our President at every opportunity and in situations that are completely unrelated. I guess I should be happy that the poster's anger was not simply directed at me but is more deeply seated.

Let me explain.

No need for explanation. This should have been a one page thread. Instead it's gone on for five because you've had an obsessive need to beat an already dead horse.

There will be no pre-emption this weekend. WINS will be back to regular programming. Done. Finished. Over.

For the record I was done at post #13.

But the thread continued ... including three of your own posts ... until I jumped back in at post #28 with a comment about consistency in general, not a complaint about WINS specifically, since that had already been adequately covered.

However I agree with you, it's time to end this thread.

Why?

Why did they chose suicide/mental health as a topic and run it on all their stations? In the NYC police department 11 [at last count, I believe] current or retired police officers have committed suicide. WCBS 880 has been reporting on each one and using news bites from the police commissioner and even the news anchors have been imploring them to reach out to mental health professionals. Since WCBS may be the top dog of Entercom's stations and can be heard in Philadelphia during daytime, which is where Entercom's headquarters are, it's not surprising they'd chose that topic. Who knows, maybe one of the big shots at Entercom or a board member had someone close to them commit suicide or has mental health issues and they figured this would be a way to help. I'm sure that in their headquarter's city, they've had police kill themselves and I'm sure it's happened in other cities they have stations in.

With the amount of increased attention towards mental health issues and suicide lately, it makes perfect sense that the company is taking the issue and created the special, which has been running since (I believe) last year, for a one-time only event.

As someone that knows people that have either threatened or have already taken their own lives, I commend Entercom for taking this and doing something with it. This is a perfect example of public service, which is something a lot of threads on here talk about the seemingly lack thereof.

As to why it was aired on every station they own, it’s to get as many ears as possible. The audience from Alt isn’t likely going to go to WINS to listen, and 880’s audience may not be likely to flip over to ‘NEW, for example. The more availability you have, the bigger the catch of potential ears.

This is just an opinion of a random listener, but I see this event to be no different than music formatted stations that serve as spillovers when two local teams are playing at the same time, or when an atrocity happens like 9/11 or the Boston Marathon Bombing, or there's a huge event like Live Aid. Although I wasn't listening to this program, nor knew about it, whether it was Sunday Morning or Wednesday during afternoon drive, Entercom decided to make this a special event. I applaud them. Did it disrupt listening habits? Sure, but no different when I want to watch a primetime show and its preempted for a special. It happens, and it shouldn't be out of expectation for such to happen. Again, just a listener's perspective of the topic.

I didn't intend add to the length of this thread, but post #45 got me wondering about the real "Why?" of this story. So I Googled it.

As I noted earlier, big corporations seldom do anything virtuous out of the goodness of their hearts. There's generally another reason and, sure enough, this case appears to be no exception:

Now, if that incident led to a radio special that is actually helping to prevent suicides that's obviously a good thing. But let's stop short of calling Entercom "admirable" for using one of its lowest rated time slots to absolve itself of the backlash from hurtful remarks made on its air.

Some mignt say this is, "beating a dead horse," but nowhere else in this thread was the above incident mentioned and I believe it is significant.

TDS?? Is it anything like the new drug and corresponding new spots on TV for PD? (Kidding!)

Really dude, the comment was tongue and cheek reference to a recent example where the President chose to publicly flail away about a mistaken reference, rather than just letting it go, referenced to your post which did much of the same (minus the sharpie modified NOAA map). And just like the Entercom conspiracy you referred, you took a simple explanation and mistake on your part, and twisted it into something completely wrong, then doubled and triple-ing down.

Not that it's any of your business, but I don't "hate" the President as you inferred. Granted, I did think the whole Sharpie on a map thing was over the top. This occurring right in the middle of a Cat. 4 hurricane where human-beings are missing and dying in the Bahama's. But I'll leave any additional comments therein to another forum.

THAT IS WHAT MY COMMENT WAS. GET IT NOW?

Yes, also in another unrelated case Entercom was under fire for an incident in Sacramento for a death during a contest where it lead to questions over Entercom's ability to hold a radio license for their Sacramento cluster and that was brought up again in the Ed Stoltz dispute and in the FCC Hearing over Entercom's then proposed deal (finalized in 2017) to take over the CBS Radio affiliates.

And the contest did not seem to hamper DJ "Trish Sweet's" career. I guess a quick name change to "Jayde Donovan" and a cross country move covered her tracks! Good things don't seem to happen at stations where she works!!

I see no relationship between a local San Diego host’s remark on a new format and the special on 258 stations nationally.

And the reported incident happened a year and a half ago.

Or, you know, it’s the nature of business.

And since when is adopting a new on-air name all that unusual?

I meant that there was some connection between where one person happened to work and the station being sold. There’s not some cosmic thing going on.

Grudges are unbecoming.

I agree. Back in May, Field outlined five community issues the company would focus on:

https://radioink.com/2019/05/22/field-we-will-play-offense/

I'd expect to see future shows dealing with the four other issues. This fits well within the guidelines the FCC sets for licensees.

You're probably right. I'm a skeptic. When I see Exxon TV ads promoting a clean environment or hear non-stop Juul radio PSAs railing against youth vaping I suspect there's pressure behind it. Maybe not in this case.
