No Sale Looming, ESPN 98.7 expected to pivot to Music

(I know that if I were Jeff Smulyan, I'd put a loop of something like "Paranoimia" on there, just to mess with everyone's minds.)
Wow I did not know we had The Art of Noise fans on this forum. I would have this on repeat during my commute. :ROFLMAO:

P.S. fwiw, someone in the last 29 pages of this thread has correctly predicted the most-likely format to come this weekend.

Since it's Emmis, clearly the next format will be Emmis Office 98.7 FM, where they Excel at playing music for your workday, take an occasional moment for religious types to spread the Word, followed by the weather Outlook, PowerPoint editorials, sports news on your favorite Teams, and of course, OneDrive traffic updates.

Sorry, this idea won't work without a subscription.

Why do you keep trying to play gatekeeper here?

I am not playing "gatekeeper". I am simply expressing my distaste for the silliness that this thread has devolved into.

I should think that if the owner or RadioDiscussions did not want people to have a discussion, it would be up to him -- not you -- to stop it. Seems like that would defeat the purpose of a discussion site, though.

Believe me when I say that I completely expect the moderators to clamp down on the silliness. Some of their posts (like from Scott Fybush) lead me to think that they are already making a list.

And then you go off with your own speculation after telling everyone else to stop. Sheesh, come on, man.

Not "speculation" ... just a recap of the previous serious discussion on the subject, with my own opinion as to likelihood, in hopes of steering this back toward reality.

And in reading the above, I must ask: Who's trying to play "gatekeeper" now?

I'm just saying that we knew about the end of WCBS 880 and flip to ESPN 880 like a week in advance but now just a day and a half away from the 98.7 switch, we're still in the dark!!!
The lights will come back on at 12:01a Sunday.

For now, you said you wanted crumbs? I've got some leftover bread crumbs if you want them. They're Italian panko, the best kind to use for chicken or eggplant parmigiana. 😉

Here are the facts:

1. Emmis doesn't owe anyone an announcement about what they're going to do come September 1. Certainly not anyone on a discussion board, and not the media. Whatever happens will happen without fanfare or a ticker tape parade. Sorry to burst your bubble.

2. Emmis has known AND planned for this all along. Whatever format is placed on 98.7 is merely a placeholder, because dead air is the worst thing you can have on any signal you're hoping to sell.

3. Emmis is NOT going to waste any money hiring a staff, doing research and putting a niche format on a signal they have stated they have every intention of selling for the past year.

4. The only companies capable of and willing to spend money on a standalone signal in NYC are religious broadcasters and perhaps someone like Cats with deep pockets and the infrastructure to add a station.

5. There has certainly been interest, but not at $50 million, and that's the problem. Emmis wants out, MediaCo has been rumored to be shaky (their deal with Estrella notwithstanding), Uforia (Univision) has gotten out of Radio in Mexico and may do so here. Even WBAI has trouble keeping an antenna site paid for, so they could be available down the road if someone with an ounce of chutzpah decided to stop indulging the board. None of this points to a future where anyone is willing to ante up big bucks for ANY signal in NYC.

6. Speculation and wishful thinking is okay, but this has seriously gotten past the point of being ridiculous.Everybody needs to take a chill pill and wait until Sunday, and THEN someone can start a new thread bashing Emmis for whatever choice they made that they disagree with.

So, unless you're an Emmis stockholder, none of us have any insights into what's coming down the pike, and Emmis isn't taking calls or answering emails about their plans for 98.7.

I'm amazed that it took a week for anyone to notice I wrote this..

And nobody will share what's behind the paywall since its a terms of service violation that will immediate lead to a termination of their account on RadioInsight and if I'm feeling chartiable here as well... :)
I'm sorry for going off topic, but the authors' names on your website are invisible

Oh, I can think of several things worse than dead air on the radio.

Why does everyone keep forgetting about Bloomberg? Also deep pockets and seemingly on a roll lately.

There has certainly been interest, but not at $50 million, and that's the problem.

What's the asking price for WLIB? That also seems like it must be be a problem.

The only ones in this thread who seem to need to relax are the ones saying this. I'm quite chilled and even amused at all the fun banter.

The price may not be the only issue. WLIB's signal isn't the greatest. It may be better than WEPN's, but not by much.

In short, it's gone too far. I stand with the mods on this one.

You guys should take your own advice and chill for yourselves until Sunday. People are trying to have a little fun here until the big reveal and some of you are are just being sticks in the (mud). The mods could lock it if they want, but I think most members understand this is not a serious speculation thread at this point. What's the harm of that? Try to have some laughs for once!
