No Sale Looming, ESPN 98.7 expected to pivot to Music

Did they ever sell off WFNI 1070? It seems like that station still exists despite losing their transmitter and the license not being sold to Radio One.
STA extension request from July 10 - Draft Copy « Licensing and Management System « FCC
Under the subject STA, WFNI is operating on an interim basis at reduced power utilizing arooftop antenna system at Emmis’s studio/office building while efforts are finalized to locate a new permanent site. As noted in previous extension requests, Emmis has identified a prospective purchaser of WFNI, whose efforts to explore options for a viable new permanent site for the station are continuing. Emmis respectfully requests an extension of the STA to allowtime for completion of these efforts and the filing of an appropriate modification application.

Here's what Radio Insight said in 2022:

The company also holds the license for Silent 1070 WFNI Indianapolis, which has until September to resume operations.

Apparently they still hold the license, but nothing else.

I see they haven't sold the headquarters building either, but it's been on the block since September. Just like 98.7.

As I mentioned upthread, Emmis says they have a potential buyer for WFNI, with that potential buyer attempting to identify possible "viable" sites.

The various STA filings provide the details on the current, temporary 200-watt nondirectional operation.

If there ever was a time to see if KTWV-east can work, now's the time. Of course, that is if there is a similarly-formatted satellite that already exists. Otherwise bring back Smooth Jazz hahaha. Most likely a buyer will emerge and this article that reiterated everything we already knew will be moot. Think of this process between Emmis and a likely buyer like a negotiation period between a free agent and their team.

The ethnic makeup of New York is totally different from that of LA. Start with the Hispanic population, which is now half of the 18-49 population of LA: it is almost totally from Mexico and northern South America. In New York, the lower percentage of Hispanics are nearly all from the Caribbean Basin, mostly Puerto Rico and the Dominican republic. One group is of Indigenous heritage, the other is Afro-Caribbean.

From there you go into the differences of the rest of the first and second generation immigrant populations which are extreme. And LA has less than 7% African American population.

So KTWV has a huge multi-decade heritage and is based on an ethnic mix that is totally dissimilar from that of NYC.

Nothing that might work in NYC. For all practical effects, "smooth jazz" is dead and gone. The Wave in LA is really an Urban AC that is not targeted at Blacks but at the same cultural identity that made KGFJ and KDAY so big "back in the day".

We can all speculate. I am looking at Cats or the folks who sold the WQXR transmitter site for so much money... or even EMF. Long shot: SBS.

I agree, until then some peoples heads will implode and imaginations will run wild. When the press conference is announced and the new owner and format is known, some of those people with imploded heads will explode. Others will complain and sum will offer there invaluable (to them) programming advice. If that was not enough I'm willing to bet some one may start a whole new thread about the sale, new owner, format or sale price....... Maybe up to 4 new threads.

Lance may have to upgrade to a Quantum computer so RadioDiscussions does not crash.

Right. KTWV-East wouldn’t look the same. I always love your explanations, David. If only more could learn from you.

I hoped the extra long haha made it clear I was joking. After reading some of the crazy replies to these threads though, I don’t blame you.

I don’t think Cats is looking at 98.7, more likely rimshots like with 107.1 WLIR. Maybe stations like WDHA or maybe even down the shore. SBS definitely on the table, but that’s not the only Spanish-language broadcasting company that likely has its sights on 98.7. I bet there’s multiple.
