No Sale Looming, ESPN 98.7 expected to pivot to Music

A press conference for announcing the sale of a radio station? I’m not trying to be rude. But, isn’t that a little “much”.

The press conference would be by the new owner announcing the new format. You don't think an owner would want press coverage of a new format?

I think the confusion here is calling it a press “conference.” In today’s media landscape, there will be a press “release.”

We can all speculate. I am looking at Cats or the folks who sold the WQXR transmitter site for so much money... or even EMF. Long shot: SBS.

Wouldn't it make sense for MediaCo to grow its New York cluster which is currently just 2 stations? This was discussed earlier, but maybe not since Mediaco's stock jumped on news of Soo Kim's holdings and since the company acquired Estrella Media's content.

Here's what Radio Insight said in 2022:

Apparently they still hold the license, but nothing else.

I see they haven't sold the headquarters building either, but it's been on the block since September. Just like 98.7.
Commercial real estate has to be rough with so much work-at-home and hybrid work

Did Cats bang his own drum after taking over WABC?

He did. He spoke with a bunch of media types, including the NY Post

He bangs his own drum anytime he does anything. When he hired Cousin Bruce or fired Rudy Giuliani. He loves the media.

Any radio owner needs to bang the drum if that want people to discover them. People don't scan the dial anymore.

How about a couple of months of NOAA Weather Radio, as Connecticut listeners heard on 93.7 about 30 years ago when WLVH ran into big money problems? Yes, that was continuous NOAA weather on a full power FM in a top 50 market!
That doesn't sound like the worst thing given the time before smart phones.

There'll be no buyer or LMA by August 31 and 98.7 will air temporary programming. That's my prediction.
It better not be another temporary alt rock format. That was just cruel what they did in 2012 with New Rock 101.9!!!! I want a PERMANENT rock format!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, something interesting I discovered. I was just fooling around and typed in 987kissfm.com and I got a website of dummy text. Maybe Kiss FM is really coming back?

Moderator Edit: The URL is owned by a foreign squatter with malware on the site. Removed the link.

Then tell all of your friends and look through your couch cushions and try to buy WLIB. The station's a mold-filled shell of it's former self. Probably the easiest station to buy in New York right now.

IMHO A one size fits all view to investments doesn't always work. This asset can be looked at in 2 (or more) ways. First is short term sell at any price and take the money and run.

Another long term view might be what can reasonably be expected positive cash flow verses the potential sale price. Would the Rate of Return be higher than what expected if the proceeds of the sale were investigated?

I guess we will see in a couple of weeks.
