Asian companies (in most cases Chinese or Japanese, in this case Indonesian) are known to buy previously used domain names, even though their previous use is unrelated to the current use. Why do they do it, I can't really understand. Also, something interesting I discovered. I was just fooling around and typed in 987kissfm.com and I got a website of dummy text. Maybe Kiss FM is really coming back?
They can't admit defeat and turn off the transmitter legally until that license they mailed to the FCC yesterday gets there, and there's no delivery on Sunday.Still dead carrier after more than an hour.
Also no HD -- RDS only, scrolling "98.7 ESPN Your City, Your Teams, Your Station!" But I can't remember if WEPN normally broadcasts in HD.
Well, that lets out the Trappist Monks buying the station and calling it "Quiet 98.7 - All Silence, All The Time".Programming is back on now.
My best guess is if it’s a music format it’ll either be alternative or country as those are the two major holes in the NYC market. They’re not known to work in NYC, mind you. Alternative has a marginally better chance IMO, and it was briefly successful when Z100 ran it in the mid-90’s. Country as far as I know has never worked in NYC, even briefly. As short-term placeholder formats they’ll hold until they get a sale to a buyer with more of a long term plan, though.Well, that lets out the Trappist Monks buying the station and calling it "Quiet 98.7 - All Silence, All The Time".
Now, back to our regular programming of wild speculation...
Would they whisper the legal ID or not do it at all?Well, that lets out the Trappist Monks buying the station and calling it "Quiet 98.7 - All Silence, All The Time".
Don't Indian companies do it a lot of the time as well?Asian companies (in most cases Chinese or Japanese, in this case Indonesian) are known to buy previously used domain names, even though their previous use is unrelated to the current use.
Chant...Would they whisper the legal ID or not do it at all?
I’ve been told a Taylor Swift format can’t work.Punk Country!
Using chimes to ring out the ID in Morse code.Would they whisper the legal ID or not do it at all?
As long as this is wild speculation, you might be missing the lede here. Note that the phony-baloney title on that phony-baloney website is "MARVEL77". Free-associate on that for a moment...Also, something interesting I discovered. I was just fooling around and typed in 987kissfm.com and I got a website of dummy text. If a station "goes silent" they have a period of time to notify the FCC. You don't have to get approval previously. They can't admit defeat and turn off the transmitter legally until that license they mailed to the FCC yesterday gets there, and there's no delivery on Sunday.
Assistant Sub-Moderator / Slave talking: I think we have gone far enough with idle and silly speculations on what this station will or should do.
Jeff Smulyan is one of the brightest minds we have had in radio in the last half-century. He will do what is best for his company as he ends his involvement with OTA radio.
With all due respect, David, the site is Radio-Discussions, not Radio-Wait-For-The-Corporate-Announcement.
There is no reason why speculating about the the future of 98.7 in any way diminishes our respect for Jeff Smulyan. One has nothing to do with the other.
Frankly, the group of people on this site who keep making comments aimed at shutting down the discussion come across as pretty arrogant. That's not aimed at you, David, but the non-moderators here who feel like they have to keep making their power plays. Members here should be free to speculate and the know-it-alls should be just as free to disagree without calling for the conversation to be shut down.
It's your prerogative if you want to lock it, but moderating this kind of discussion in such a heavy-handed manner in red text smacks of the bad old days around here.

But this thread has gone beyond discussion into a series of senseless posts. With all due respect, David, the site is Radio-Discussions, not Radio-Wait-For-The-Corporate-Announcement.
