No Sale Looming, ESPN 98.7 expected to pivot to Music

I believe he means while it’s under Emmis. They won’t go dead air.

And the format will probably not be teased, it’ll just be piped in from a provider on the low probably.
Because I believe we knew about ALT 92.3’s flip to 1010 WINS about a month in advance

Not that I want to pour rocket fuel on this thread, but keep in mind that going silent is a possibility. It wouldn't seem to be the optimal solution, but the option is there.

That's what Emmis did in Indianapolis, as I posted a few days ago:

They own an AM in Indianapolis that has no tower property. They filed silent authorization with the FCC saying they're negotiating with a buyer. They can do the same thing here. All of these format ideas are based on an unsourced article from Inside Radio. No one else is reporting the station will "pivot to music."

A very different situation there. The station wasn't for sale and wasn't purchased, and Audacy rightfully wanted to promote the move ahead of time. Not much unlike the launches of full-power FM simulcasts of KYW and KNX.

I would hesitate to call KYW's 270-watt FM simulcast "full-powered".

WPHI puts a good signal over the metro area and because there are no real terrain issues, it's likely receivable clearly in Trenton and Wilmington, which is pretty much all of the major populated area.

I just don't understand why Audacy never changed the calls to KYW-FM.

Believe it or not - that 270 watts actually gets out nearly as well as the Roxborough 8kW signals. It also helps that it is in mono only which is far more efficient for wideband FM considering also it's a talk format. 103.9 is audible up into Princeton, albeit scattered, but it's there. You begin to reliably receive it just south of Trenton, and just north of Wilmington (WXCY on 103.7 really eats it up on the less selective radios).

I’ve read speculation that as part of Audacy agreement with CBS might be relinquishing call letters that are shared with CBS owned tv stations after a period of time, they might need CBS’s permission to use KYW call letters on another station. Except for every 30 minute formal station ID, all of their branding is KYW 103.9 FM so they probably don’t think they need to officially change call letters of FM station

100.3 would've been perfect for KYW. Better signal and It covers where it's needed in the Philadelphia market and only starts to have interference with Z100 in Hamilton, NJ, at least on the rest area on the NJ turnpike North.

I remember last summer during the intense wildfire smoke in May, we had that insane tropo opening and hearing Z100 and Big 100.3 both destroying WRNB only at exit 5 on the turnpike.

That didn't stop them from changing the calls on 97.1 here in L.A. to KNX-FM when they began simulcasting the all-news format.

CBS specifically gave Entercom a perpetual right to use the KYW brand and calls in the merger agreement. There are restrictions on how it could be transferred (which I imagine means changing WPHI's calls to KYW-FM).

Doesn't it seem odd to you that the KNX calls are nowhere to be found in that document? I do.

And I don't see anything in there that would prevent WPHI taking the calls KYW-FM. Now I wonder if perhaps the FCC won't let that grandfathered "K" call be duplicated.
