NOLA sports radio is a mess. There has to be a better option, and there is.

I just can't stand to listen to WWL any longer. I'm dying for decent sports talk and the L has nothing to offer. They are horrible. They are Saints and LSU talk, not sports talk. Believe it or not, there are sports fans in the New Orleans region who are interested in the Hornets, major league baseball, and many other sports. I love the Saints and LSU too but WWL's coverage is unlistenable.

I used to enjoy Gerry V's show on the Sportsmonster. It's too bad that it's not on any more. He was able to cover a buffet of items. He spoke well, entertained and knew what the heck he was talking about. I happened to hear Gerry on WRNO one Saturday morning. What a genius move! Hide the best sports talk host in the city on an off day in the early AM.

I hear that Bob Christopher is out as PM at WRNO. Not sure if that will help RNO's chances of actually getting a rating, but it can't hurt. Maybe the next group will find Gerry a weekday slot. I hope so. I heard that there may be a couple of weekday RNO slots opening up. It would be great to see them get serious and make a legit run at the L. WWL's sports talk is so ripe for picking. RNO should take the gun they already have in house and take a shot.

Just a few more thoughts. I'm all about sports talk, but when I listend to Gerry's Saturday show I was shocked to hear him doing current events, pop culture and other similar topics. It was very entertaining. If they are afraid of making the all sports commitment on a daily basis, maybe RNO should consider some kind of hybrid show where Gerry does a buffet of sports and current events. I'd prefer all sports, but a hybrid show would still be better than WWL's version of sports talk or anything thats on RNO now.

Agreed...its really sad WWL doesn't even mention the Hornets. I'm in Houston now and occasionally listen to sports talk after the sun sets and it's all LSU & Saints. While I like both teams, it is basketball season and should be worthy of discussion. Guess it's off limits because creating interest would drive listeners to Citadel stations during gametime. What a shame.

Love him or hate him, at least Kaare Johnson talked Hornets on WWL. That may have been the only regular coverage they have had.

Interesting. I can't give a rat's wazoo about the Hornets and I feel 180 degrees different about WWL's coverage. Every morning all the "G-Cat" (ugh) talks about is the Hornet's. Every night it seems like they talk about the Hornet's. Tonight they had a total "breakdown" of the game and some player who has been suspended for 2 years for drugs. I guess we all hear, and don't hear, want we want to hear, and make a big deal of what we don't hear because no one listens to any entire show.

When they talk Hornets, they don't know what the hell they are talking about. It sounds like a bunch of guys who can't speak english trying to describe basketball after seeing it for the first time. Football isn't that much different. They are ripe for picking. Their on air talent is suspect. Very suspect. Sad actually.

i totally agree to your rant fleur de bee wwl sports talk sounds like an elementary school child giving a speech i mean what a sick group they have.If you seek logical and more fluent and widespread spotstalk then tune into WGSO 990 AM 6-10 pm weeknights. Its as simple as that, youll get widespread and opinionated sports talk that covers a whole lot more than WWL can only dream of doing and to think their signal is much stronger yet they cant take advantage of it.Even though WGSO powers their signal down at night they still offer the most widespreand sports talk lineup.

At this point, if WWL doesn't talk Hornets, they will lose any credibility they may have as a "sports talk" station. Like it or not, the Hornets are now major news and fans are filling the bandwagon. Whats funny is that WWL is forced to talk Hornets and show just how bad at it they are. ksw2844 mentioned them breaking down a game. Well if it's anything like a WWL NFL football "breakdown", I guess you can say the Hornets are running through teams like "crap through a goose" as the the other monkeys on the show all nod with approval.

Wow.
I didn't know you could hear "nodding" on the radio.
And "monkeys?" "Monkeys?"
At least you're too big of a man to resort to juvenile name calling.
Bro. Get a hobby and let go of the anger.
Life's too short.

No anger. I just want to see New Orleans "sports talk" finally grow up. It's awful and has been awful for years. For whatever reason, in the past, the New Orleans sports fan has been OK with settling on the low barometer and standard that WWL has set. With the emergence of a successful NBA run, the city's sports IQ seems to be rising. I just want to see the media's rise as well. Especially sports talk stations and hosts.

WWL, WGSO, WIST, WRNO, none of these stations are true sports talk stations. Your being un-realisitc to expect them to be good. If you really want to complain about sports radio, then look at 1280 an ask why they have NO LOCAL HOST. Maybe one of these other news talk stations should give it up and go after local sports talk that really matters.

The best sports talks Ive heard around the country are generally ones that do not have ties to local teams. WWL will not really go after the saints. Too much money involved to burn that bridge. They ignore the hornets because they are competition for their team. GSO is not a player. I can't hear the damn thing and on the rare occassion I can get it, it's UNO volleyball. Please. WIST does Tulane, no one pays attention so who cares there. Ive heard their sports on saturday a couple times, it makes me laugh but i like kaare. no one else on this board does. RNO is not doing any sports are they? I heard the Vman once or twice but couldnt take that voice so early in the morning.

Your not going to get good sports talk in this town unless you can prove that you dont have to "carry" teams to pay the bills.

I've traveled all over the country and have always seeked out the local sports shows. In major markets, they talk about all local teams no matter who they may or may not be affiliated with. The "everything Saints" mindset is archaic. It's typical of New Orleans' "it's the way we've always done it" mentality. There is an educated sports talk fan out there but he doesn't listen to any of this foolishness. He has sattelite radio, listens to podcasts and so forth. A local sports talk show that would dare to stretch the status quo approach would be a breath of fresh air, and would elevate competition in the market. Seems like Gerry V was just making a noticable splash when Katrina wrecked the city and radio scene.

Anyway, thats the content issue. This is a two headed monster. On air talent is another story. WWL has none. People with speech impediments aren't funny or professional. Guys with anger issues shouldn't be on the air. That "endearing dialect" theory that some people would like to sell as a good thing is embarassing. When people from outside of our market listen to what we call professional sports talk journalism, they walk away thinking we are all retarded. When I compare Deke, Hokie, Kenny, Bobby, and many other locals to what I hear in major markets with professional stations who cover the area's sports teams it's not even in the same ballpark.

New Orleans needs better content and better on air talent. The point of my thread was to bring up that there is a guy in town who I think has already proved that we can be an intelligent sports talk market. He also has the talent, knowledge and professional experience the rest of the stations seem to lack. Why Gerry V isn't on M-F doing a 2-3 hour "sports talk" show is beyond me. It would be different if he were caught up in a log jam of other good shows and talented hosts, but we have none.

Fleur-de-bee, why don't you just BUZZ off.Are you Gerry V's talent agent?you sound like it.How dare you make fun of people with speech impediments. Great sportscasters like Buddy D was a New Orleans legend ,sure he had speech
problems, but listen to me VERY carefully,He Overcame that Obstacle and was a hugh sucess. He knows people had fun with him on most New Orleans radio stations, but you know what he was gracious and did not mind at all. When will you be traveling all over the country again? Please make it soon.

Buddy D was a legend, no doubt about that. But Deke and Bobby and Kenny and Hokie and the boys can't compare to Buddy.

One of the problems with the Gerry V idea, which would be great in a perfect world, is that Clear Channel owns WODT and just wants to milk it for anything that it's worth. Why else would they run those stupid community updates from 99.5? The other problem is the Hornets impacting Gerry V's schedule for 1/2 the year.

WODT is a throwaway for CC - no expenses. It's a waste of a signal.

WIST has to have Tulane and the Zephyrs on. It makes money for them and without them, WIST would probably be off the air because they can't sell or market the programming that they have.

Sports talk in New Orleans should be better. Unfortunately, for the near future, it won't get any better.

Fleur-de-bee's problem is that using he/she's own argument, we can shoot it down. Gerry V HAD a Monday-Friday sports show. While entertaining and fun to listen to, in the end, it simply didn't move the needle enough. And I think one of the things that hurt that show in the long run was the fact that for a good chunk of the year, you have to work around the fact your host is on the road and either you need to find an ISDN or get a sub - and there just isn't a lot of talent out there.

The problem with LOCAL sports talk in this market is that the bandwagon fills up when a team is doing good, and once they start slipping, the bandwagon gets lighter. And in the end, there just isn't enough of a hardcore sports audience to make a LOCAL sports show work long-term.
