NOLA sports radio is a mess. There has to be a better option, and there is.

We're all missing another point here. Sports talk is successfully done on stations that don't focus on x's and o's. Those are secondary. If you think that good sports talk is breakin down that 3rd and 18 where Eli threw it and Tyree caught it and did you see the way he held it against his helmet blah blah blah then you don't get it. There are not enough hard core sports fans in any city for that to work. Booze, Broads and Balls.....generally in that order. If a station in this market tried THAT, the same ones screaming about bad sports talk would be screaming about how that's not sports talk, they need to break down the game.

Whole thread comes across as "I should be a sports talk host" because the other guy(s) don't know how to do it.

Woah gang ! One of the guys told me this topic was on the board so allow me to clear the air. Sports Radio 1280 prior to Katrina was doing 3's which is not bad at all for a 5,000 watt am station.....we also had an active client base and Clear Channel way paying me a nice salary.Katrina hit and the tower and the signal had some problems and I moved to Ok City with the Hornets and started a show there in afternoon drive.

I have done my shows from the road for 16 years when I travel doing the NBA or other assigiments.I use studios or setups in various arenas and have been the entire time.

New management came on board and their philosophy was different due to the budget after Katrina. Then WRNO was a start up ( while I was away in OKC)..I moved back....

The Sports Talk base in New Orleans is stronger then some of you realize...you just need to nurture it...

I'm luck that I have my NBA work ,,a new TV show in another market ..plus segements i do at other stations around the country during the week...plus an internet project...

I do believe that Sportstalk has its place if properly done ........Sports is part of the fabric in New Orleans.Talk Radio in general is a format that I love.It plays a vital role in our market.

I also agree that the market is ripe for a new player.....that needs to be approached properly as well.....

There are severalhosts i know that travel like i do that do shows.I have great relationships with stations around the country that provide me a studio...

as the market understands that it is unique ( it has the SEC and other College programs and TWO PRO TEAMS !!!) someone will try and do sports radio properly.....we are the only 2 PRO TEAM MARKET without a SPORTSTALK RADIO FORMAT that features local hosts.!!!!

WWL like several other large NewsTalk stations does spsorts in afternnon drive ( others do it at 7-9 or 10 pm...major cities are doing that)

It may require a PD or GM who is a sports fan to do so or one that understands the sports culture here in New Orleans.

All i know is that there are good talk radio fans regardless of the talk format.....

NBA & NFL and SEC etc in the market ...thats is HUGE

also i appreciate the kind comments but no ...i don't know anyone on this board but thanks for the kind words...

for now my spsorts work takes place elsewhere...but my General talk is on weekends at WRNO......with some big sports stories added....

I'm just happy to be back in New Orleans with friends and family

regards

GV

You are class act gerryv, no doubt.
Not sure I felt that way a week after you came to our city, but I know it now.
Good luck.
I hope you end up on a station with a future.

Gerry I enjoyed our brief time together in NOLA. I thought you did a great job in difficult circumstances. I did everything I could to make your work easier, and I thoroughly enjoyed the "back and forth." By the way, I was right about Drees, maybe a season early, but I made that call and it happened. You might recal you poo pooed me on that one. Good luck if you're still involved with that burning blimp with DL at the helm.

i worked with some fabulous folks ! after the storm the work effort by many was off the charts and i enjoyed the terrific support i recieved from guys that knew the tech stuff ( i'm of course clueless with that stuff)......you must be one of the special ones that cared so much about their work.....i'm enjoying the weekend show and i'm told there are plans to expand it....right now i'm on a 10 day road trip doing my NBA work.....i check out radio shows wherever i travel......talk radio is so much fun sometimes i think i better medicate myself......ok ok i set myself up ! some folks that know me think i need meds regardless

grins

Can anyone on this topic type a complete sentence without misspelled words, incorrect punctuation, or some other grammatical faux pas? Good grief.

By the way, Wilkie still rules.

gerry v youre right there is a market for sports talk here i know because i am a sports fanatic used to listen to you on 1280 pre katrina and it was great hope things can materialize some day soon where you get a drive time sports talk show

Thanks for the nice words ! Things will shape up now that we're back here in New Orleans for the long run. It seems everyone was saying to me " what if the team moves again ?"
How long will you be here. I guess folks can now see its a long term run..plus my wife and her family are all from New Orleans and surrounding areas...( she may kick my %$#@! if we moved again)...thanks...V

I wouldn't push it as far as "Booze, Broads and Balls", but I very much agree.

Look at The Ticket in DFW. In a market with a LOT of signals, they do rather well in the ratings.

I am also one of the few defenders(on this board) of Kaare. Hearing him after Buddy D on WWL made me think he was the heir apparent. Buddy D is missed today. He could get away with calling out the Saints' organization(and I use the term "organization" loosely) when they rested on their laurels or made dumb moves. Without him, Sportstalk is now "shilltalk".

just one question for all who can please answer when wil we have a 24 hour sports talk station with local personalities i remember 1280 am and that was good stuff i sure miss that i wouldnt mind seeing that happen again if there isanyone who can give me an idea to what chances there are for a possible return of a 24 hour sports talk station mixed with local sports talk shows
