Non Commercial radio comes to Northwest Connecticut!!!

Willpower radio and Tri-State Public Communications have signed a LMA agreement that will take effect on November 1st. WKZE AM 1020 will become AM 1020 WHDD/real hometown radio. WHDD will feature block programming, lots of live remote broadcasts, talk and interview shows..all local...Tri-State Public Communications is a 501 (c)(30 non-profit corporation that operates robinhoodradio.com, and CATV 6 in Northwest Connecticut. AM 1020 WHDD will become the first non-commercial sation in the northwest part of Connecticut. WHDD wills erve adjacent Eastern new York, and Southerm berkshire County in MA. On-air date is set for November 1st if all equipment arrives in time!!!

Woo hoo.. this was already posted once and cancelled.

Who cares? Well see. We were told the same thing by naysayers like you when we sarted the local access station, three years later, we now have gained almost 25% more viewers according to the DPUC survey, our internet station has a base of over 5,000 regular listeners in just 5 months...and I dare say, AM 1020 WHDD will do just fine with people that want local news, two way talk, local broadcasts on-location, and sports. So, when your up in our area, keep listening to your favorite stations, your not our target demo, and probably never will be unless you move here, or really care about what happens. And don't leave Kent if you want to listen to WGSK!

Dude,

What exactly you are trying to promote here is nebulous, at best. What exactly is "Robin Hood Radio"? Give us a reason to be interested in it. Point us to a website that will attract our interest. You've already posted this once before, and not only did it not attract interest, based on the responses (or lack thereof), but it was also removed shortly afterward.

You come across sounding like a fraud and a shyster, and your offensive, rather than defensive remarks make you seem like a dislikable individual. That may or may not be the case. Wagging your finger and running away, yelling "You'll See! You'll See!!!!" is not exactly gaining any credibility for the product you seemingly wish to promote.

I think you need a few more posts around these parts before you start taking up attitude with the regulars here.

You've got my interest, though. Tell me what "Robin Hood Radio" is, and why I should be interested in it.... I'm listening...

Oh, and dude-- Learn how to spell. Learn how to write. Maybe take an English course or two.

Marshall is just washed up in radio and has sour grapes because he used to work for BOTH WKZE-FM and WQQQ-FM.... I know he was FIRED from at least one of the stations.

If he was a REAL Professional, he would've handled comments like this alot better, but he hasnt.

Yeah, Paul.

But at least give him a chance to respond to criticism... He's apparently trying to offer us an alternative to the sad state of radio in CT... I really want to see what it is he is offering... As we all know, most LMAs are shitty offerings at best... I think we have enough brokered block programming as it is... So what is it that Mr. Marshall has to offer (that is besides snide remarks about stations like WGSK)?

Honestly I do believe he worships that 77 watts. You wish, pal. Sad but true.

-A

Alan, my remark about WGSK were off base. Sorry. A little quick at the key when I read your post about no one really caring. I can't help the spelling, a learning disability with reading certain keys on the keyboard, so, please put up with the spelling. I do worship the 77 watts...i worship any signal, AM or FM. I think that to many signals today are wasted. Robin Hood Radio is wall to wall music. New, independent artists, some of the older music, and established AAA artists. We have tried to make robinhoodradio.com sound like a radio station on the internet...not an internet radio station. We have invested in processing equipment, a 128 kb signal, and all as a 501 (c)(3) that pays no wages, a station that has underwriting to support the investment made to make it possible. There are no other motives for robinhoodradio.com other than to offer somthing that is clean, different, and jsut a little upbeat. We offer podcasts on certain programs, some nice prizes, and over 50 minutes of music every hour. A latino show on the weekends, two bigh band segments, blues, and more. We also invested in a website that we update and change frequently. After five months, we have about 5,000 unique listeners..not huge, but its growing every month. If I offended you with my comments, it was just a reaction to your, does anyone care comment! Yes, some people really do care. Come up and take a look at my operation...its not perfect, but I think youll find it interesting..I'll even buy lunch! As for Paul, well,
yes, I have been fired twice, but I have been hired eight other times! I have more people who respect me in the business, than who don't. it's not a business that everyone will love you or what you do. But I digress. Robin Hood won't be on the old WKZE...It will be a mix of lots of live broadcasts on-location, news, and talk shows, Democracy Now at noon, some block program music, local sports, and lots of local anouncements on whats happening in the area. Irt will also be operated with underwriting, as it is part of our 501 (c)(3) non profit corporation. We must be doing something right..in three years we have raised over 300,000 in donations and grants, all invested in new, digital equipment. Alan, when your are in the area, stop by, I will show you the operation. Who knows, you might find it interesting to look at, if not to listen to! Paul, you can stay home until you learn how to behave like an adult.

Ahhh... that's better :)

What the hell, I may even be able to help with some engineering/VO work if you need. It sounds interesting, and I for one would like to see it work.

I wasn't the one who said 'who cares'. Actually, not to put words in his mouth, but I think Bill meant something more along the lines of 'how do you expect this to really go anywhere?' It's true, it has been tried before, and failed. Just look at the history of 990 WNTY/WXCT 'The ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) group... That station has been through hell trying to find its identity, finally settling on something typical and bland-- Dr. Laura, Sattellite Sisters, etc...

In any case I'm glad you stood up to the plate and responded to my comments. I commend you. Feel free to email me if you need some help with audio processing or engineering in your endeavour. I wish you luck with it...

Thanks for clarifiying my position, Alan. I honestly don't see alot of people on that side of the state embracing something like this. Not to say it isn't a valid attempt, but just the limited popuation in the area is something that will make it more difficult to move forward. Look at what ended up happening at my former engineering home, WMMM in Westport - located in a very affulent community, the long time mismanagement of the station damaged it to such a point the only saving grace was when the Grahams donated it to WSHU. It's a pretty sad testement to have your hometown radio station turned into nothing more than an NPR Satellite repeater.

Yeah, bill.

I'm actually listening to his stream now. It's kind of interesting from a programming standpoint, a good listen. There are issues with the program material though. The processing seems a little weak to me as well. Sounds a little like... well... 'DRC. Inconsistent. But you can tell the stream itself has the capacity for better audio and since I live in the area I think it would be fun to work with him to see if I can improve things a bit...

He seems like a good guy. I wouldn't mind doing a bit of production/engineering. It's been a while and I need to excercise these old vocal cords anyway-- once I get over this lousy cold, that is :)

Bill and Alan...I started WKZE AM with Warren Gregory. It always had a VERY loyal audience. I feel it has been totaly cast adrift with Air America just thrown on, and not evennbroadcasting half the time. This is my attempt, and I repeat, attempt, to bring back the stations credibility, and regain its VERY loyal base. I hope to revive its past, and see it be more than just another "rebroadcasat" tower. If I have said anything that offends anybody in the process of trying to state that, I am sorry!

Any help would be appreciated...Its basicly a two person operation! The stream is a little weak because I HATE DISTORTION, and I don't wwant to overcook it!!! thanks for the comments, if you are intrested in helping email me [email protected]

Again, thanks

MM

Marshall, check your voicemail. Oh, and by the way, you haven't offended me. It's actually refreshing to correspond with someone who can take constructive criticism and not turn it into a food fight. Awesome :)

Alan,

Regarding 990 WXCT, The ADD Radio Group hasn't owned the station in more than 2 years. The problem with WXCT was 2 years ago when Davidson Media Group bought the station they LMA'd it to some guy who thought the Hartford-area needed another Spanish Language Radio Station. This guy who was previously GM of 1220 in New Haven when they were a Spanish station and later launched a pirate Spanish Station in New Haven at 104.5 FM after 1220 went to Quinnipiac. He later became GM at 990 when they were Spanish the first time which was (July 99-September 00). I don't recall when he became GM over there. Since October 2005, the station has been back in control of GM Charlie Profit (he was GM from 7/01 to 2/05). His company signed an LMA for 2 years that went into effect on 7/1/06. (Charlie referrs to it as a Time Brokerage Arrangement). If you don't like the Weekday Programming check out the programming on the Weekend. - Two great "Home Improvemnent" radio shows - The Money Pit (Saturdays 8AM-10AM) and The Handy Man Show with Glenn Haggee (Saturdays 10AM-12PM). A great show about pets - Talkin' Pets (Saturdays 5PM-7PM). A great show about Movies - The Movie Show on Radio (Sundays 5PM-6PM), a great show about travel - Travel with Stephanie Abrams (Sundays 7PM-9PM), and what many refer to as the greatest Italian Show in the Hartford-Waterbury area (Sundays 830AM-1PM).

I also hear that a Part-Time Sales Guy is going to begin working at WXCT in December or January.

Marc B.
Someone who has no connection to WXCT other than the fact he's friends with the GM and he's an occasional listener.

Marc...

Yeah, I like the Italian show! As an aside, are you the guy who wrote the online fictional story about the station? Or am I confusing you with someone else? I liked the story but now when I go to the site to read anything additional it tells me I need a password. Huh?

When I was at WLAD/WDAQ, I was looking for some engineering work and Tom Osenkowsky recommended me to go up to (then) WNTY. He told me they had recently purchased a new Arakkis 10 and were looking for someone to wire it up. This was a long time ago, perhaps 13-14 years. I had a friend who lived in Southington at the time and I knew exactly where the station was. I used to park in the lot and make out with my girlfriend under the tower lights-- lol. I'd been inside the studio before, visiting one of the board-op/hosts on an impromptu visit. I remember A Texar AudioPrism in the rack in the transmitter room, a couple of crappy consumer-type CD players and cassette decks, no remote starts at all. I think the console may have been an old Gates Yard...

Anyway, I drove up the next day, opened the door, and was greeted by a grumpy old man, a really mean-looking old woman, and a scrungy old dog. I told him that Tom had sent me, and that he had explained to me that they were looking for someone to wire up their new console. I was about to reach for my wallet to hand him a business card, when he gave me this look like I had just beamed down from the planet mars, acted like he didn't know what the F**K I was talking about, and pretty much asked me to leave.

A year later the station was off the air.

My impression is that ol' 990 is like the proverbial village bicycle-- "everyone's had a turn!" ROFL...

Go Figure...

WXCT has a Radio Sysstem's Millenium Console.

Last I knew, the CD players and automation couldn't remote start via the board still..

Well, that can be fixed. Easily and cheaply, by me. I can modify the existing CD players to accept a trigger signal from the board; if Charlie wants me to do so I'd be willing to offer my services for free. I just finished a long conversation with him, we talked about programming, equipment, and your post in another thread about the trade deal where he wants to help a family in need. I think it is an excellent idea.

I think the station has alot of potential, and speaking with Mr. Profit has given me a new outlook on the station as I once knew it, a long, long time ago. I think he is doing an excellent job.

Thanks for the info, Marc, and thanks to Charlie for spending so much time with me on the phone. I hope at least some of what I said made sense, LOL. Blast this damn cold.... heheheh...
