Non-country songs that sound country.

I think this is very interesting Has anybody noticed more Alt-Country artists on CHR/HAC Radio in 2012. What I mean is acts like Mumford & Sons, Monsters of Men, Imagine Dragons , Alabama Shakes and Maybe Fun is The Americana/Alt Country format going mainstream finally if so I hope it keeps going because its beats hearing hip-hop and Justin Bebier all the time

Thoughts?

And, this may be a stretch, but how about Goin To California by Led Zeppelin?

Also, got to remembering how Tom Jones' Green, Green Grass of Home got some country airplay. True, Green was first performed by Porter Wagner, but who would have predicted a country playlist mentioning Tom Jones? And I believe Jones also got some C/W time with Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow.

Oh, and Sloop John B by the Beach Boys. Wow, am I on a roll or what ?!

Might be obvious, but how about Faraway Eyes by the Rolling Stones? or would that definitely be a country song by a non-country artist?

I've heard different opinions on whether Bonnie Raitt is considered country. I don't like her music, but "Something to Talk About" probably counts.

I'm with you on Bonnie Raitt. Not crazy about her myself, but her music is seductive, and I actually liked Something To Talk About, a song with a country additude.

urban cowboy soundtrack:

bonnie raitt-dont it make you wanna dance (100% country) actually charted country 'round 1981 for a few weeks, and the first song i ever played live on a radio show via CD, circa 5-92. also, has another country cut on that album...

bonnies music is rooted in blues, and r&b. yet, there is some cross over appeal with all that slide guitar work, and great ballad singing. plain and simple, many of us consider her USA 'music royalty' in this country, and one of the finest, finest singing voices as well.

There's a song called "Horse" off of the Live album "Throwing Copper." It definitely falls into the non-country songs that sound country category.

Vchimp - If you don't like Sheryl Crow, you're not going to be too happy to hear this... she's reportedly working on a country album for release later this year. She's already said she thinks it sounds a lot more country than much of what is now played on country radio.

She's charted at country before, not only on Kid Rock's "Picture" but with her version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest." She and Jewel were at least easier to swallow when it came to country music than was Jessica Simpson.

I don't think "All I Wanna Do" (which is also my least favorite song by her) sounds very country at all. "If It Makes You Happy" also features a steel guitar (on verse two), and I don't think it sounds country either.

Tom Jones not only got "some country time" with "Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow," he went to #1 on the chart.

Jimmy Buffett's "Come Monday" from 1974 sounds country to me, although "Margaritaville" - which was actually a Top 20 country hit - does not (to me at least, though it still gets some airplay on WYCD in Detroit - to be fair, though, WYCD plays quite a bit of music that is not country, and way too much Kid Rock for my tastes). Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" also made Top 20 country when it was current. A lot of Lightfoot's material sounds more authentically country than most of what's played on country today, especially songs like "Rainy Day People" from 1975.

Speaking of WYCD, I remember them playing Bonnie Raitt's "Something To Talk About" in the mid-1990s (the station was not around yet when the song was a current hit). It actually fit pretty well among all the other "Young Country" they played.

And WYCD has also played Ricky Nelson's "Travelin' Man" on their Sunday-morning oldies show. Did Nelson even chart country at all?

And yes, WYCD played the country version of "Hey Soul Sister" when it was current.

Then there was Lady Gaga's equally awful country version of "Born This Way." Did any country stations ACTUALLY play that turd?

Speaking of Gaga, I was a little surprised that she didn't try to promote "You And I" to country radio. It sounded almost exactly like a 1990s Shania Twain song to my ears (specifically "Honey I'm Home").

sheryl crow, and willie nelson nail, i said nail! "if i were a carpenter" on the june carter tribute CD a few years ago in a duet. a true masterpiece as good or better than the johnny and june version. first time i heard "all i wanna do" was walking through a record store before it was out as a single. half way through the song i went up to the counter person, and quipped who is this? oh, sheryl crow? all we had known from her at the time was "leaving las vegas" from triple A radio. country no! but kinda sounded a bit like stealers wheel "stuck in the middle with you".

Rick Nelson, Traveling Man...

Only a personal recollection, but some country stations played Nelson's Garden Party in the '70s.

And speaking of Nelson, his Hello MaryLou certainly strained with familiar "Country" nuance. And to prove it, no less than the Statler Bros copied it.

 Okay, my curiosity got the better of me and I looked it up. It doesn't sound country at all to me. It sounds pure pop/rock, while the original is dance music with a short rap verse near the end.

"You & I" sounds more country to me than some Taylor Swift songs I've heard. I thought that a radio was playing the pop station when I heard "We're Never Ever Getting Back Together". But I heard the country station station ID after the song was over.

first time i heard "all i wanna do"...but kinda sounded a bit like stealers wheel "stuck in the middle with you".

I knew that "All I Wanna Do" reminded me of something! I wouldn't be surprised if there's a mashup out there somewhere.

I'm not too familiar with Ricky Nelson or the Statler Brothers. This is music that I'll have to look up. I think I am starting to like some country, especially after realizing that a lot of my favorite "rock" songs have a certain folksy roots sound that is very similar to more traditional sounding country music.

Thanks for all of the good informative replies everyone. I actually wasn't expecting any more than one or two replies.
