NorCal Broadcasters: Free Ads ... and a Radio Job Fair

Item 1:

On Monday (March 2), the 60 member radio stations of the Northern California Broadcasters Association will begin a campaign to educate Bay Area consumers on the advantages of purchasing a new vehicle during the month of March.

These spots will be run at no charge to dealers. The campaign has a value of over $1,500,000.00.

...That's four spots a day per station, multiplied by 60 stations, for 30 days. Gratis.

Item 2:

NCBA will hold a radio job fair on Monday, March 16, at the Parc 55 Hotel, 5th and Market streets in San Francisco, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Come by the Mission Room at the Parc 55 for a presentation about the different types of jobs at radio stations, beginning at 5 PM.

Whaaaaaat? ...Th-th-there's jobs to be had in radio? Really?

No, there are no jobs in radio. These "job fairs" are an effort to convince the federal government that the employer has made a "good faith" effort to reach out to people of all races, sexes, and ages in order to satisfy EEOC regulations. When the feds come to them and ask, "Did you recruit potential employees in your city of license?" they can then whip out the resumes and say, "See, we were at the Job Fair" and we received 500 resumes from people in neighborhoods all over San Francisco.

It's a common ploy. Nobody is saying there are any jobs. Certainly we all know people in the radio biz who have been laid off in staff cutbacks.
