Norsan Media To Acquire Genuine Austin Radio

Ramon Loo who for many years was the PD for Univision in San Antonio and then LA Z in Austin was recently hired to lead these flips and will oversee all Texas ventures for Norsan so I'm sure things will get interesting with these new stations.

Ramón is one of the very best. Worked with him for a number of my HBC/Univision years and really believe in him!

KOKE-FM (99.3) is now a Regional Mexican format called “Mexicanisma 99.3”.

K253AN (98.5), which has been a simulcast with KOKE is now “Leyendas” (Legends) which seems to be a more gold based Regional Mexican format.
Somewhat surprised Norsan broke the simulcast. Perhaps they’ve determined the 99.3 signal is adequate for the HDHA parts of the market. I doubt they care about anywhere west of MoPac.

I know call letters are mostly irrelevant these days, but wonder if they might dump the KOKE-FM call to avoid any marketing confusion with separately owned Hispanic targeted KOKE 1600?
launching three new formats on day one is pretty impressive.
That it is. Curious about other examples of multiple formats launching simultaneously.
My congratulations on the name they picked. When Amalia González and I created Recuerdo in LA in 2000, we went through a lot of names and never thought of that one. If we had, we would have used it instead of the kind of dated "Recuerdo" name.
Unfortunately Magia is on a dinky exurban AM signal and a translator that is confined to Williamson County. it will be the most overlooked format of the cluster unless it can get an additional translator in the western hills tower farm.

99.3 is not a great signal but i think is adequate or close to adequate it for this format. Most of the hispanic population is east of 35. I think splitting them is probably a good decision.

I totally agree and wonder if Romantica on 105.3 will eventually be switched to simulcast Magia. That will be a much more complete signal.

It's also worth pointing out that 104.9 and 95.1/1530 are redundant. Perhaps a new format or simulcast will eventually land on 95.1.

While these Norsan formats are not full market, I wonder if collectively they will end up causing a flip in one of the other four full power spanish FMs operated by Waterloo and Univision.

Here's Lance's article about the launches...

Also worth pointing out is a slight branding tweak... What was Romantica 105.3 seems to now be Romance 105.3.

Looks like the other shoe has dropped for GAR…Bob Cole and Eric Raines has jumped ship from the new KOKE FM online venture as of Saturday. I guess they decided to cash out after the sale. Midday host Deena Blake is out as well. Wondering if Deena will jump to 95.9? Doubt if the KOKE FM online venture lasts 18 months even especially with this news.

If anything, fewer salaries might help keep it afloat.
Very few FMs that move to online only last. But if they keep expenses low, who knows?

Not sure where else they might go, but it almost looks like they got another offer from someone. Can’t imagine Bob going back to iHeart, but the two of them would seem to be good fits at 95.9 if Audacy is serious about the format.

Deena was on air….err online today and is still on website.

So, long time reader, first time poster. I am not in the biz but find it interesting. I also have streamed Bob/Sammy/Eric since the early 2000’s….so a big fan.

Anyways, question. Koke was sold in April of course, does that mean that Norsan is running this online version of Koke, or did someone else retain this? Obviously it’s not Bob or Eric since they are out.

KOKE was not sold in April. Norsan announced they they were taking the rest of Genuine Austin Radio in April. Still nothing at the FCC has been filed.

Back in August of last year it was announced they acquired KTXX and K287FG. Nothing has been filed with that either, although they have been operating those stations since shortly there after.

If you go back to November of 2020 it was announced in the trades that Norsan was acquiring KZNX/K236AY. I believe Norsan used the word "expansion" in the press release. Nothing has been filed with that sale either. Both KZNX and the translator are still owned by licensee America Telecommunications Group and operated by Norsan.

It seems like not everyone has the same definition of "acquired".

OK, I was wrong about Deena, sorry about that. ...didn't help that she wasn't listed in the press release about the changes on whether she was staying or not...

My apologies, I wasn’t trying to point out you were wrong. I should have been clearer. She was on air, on the website so why wouldn’t they list her on the press release also? A little confusing on their side.

Norsan is finally pulling the trigger on buying KOKE-FM 99.3, K253AN 98.5, KTAE 1260 and K270CO 101.9 from Austin Genuine Radio.
