Northern California WB/UPN merger fallout:The return of an Independent 58 while the Bay Area will now have 3 Independents!

Northern California WB/UPN merger fallout:The return of an Independent 58 while the Bay Area will now have 3 Independents!

I am guessing that since CBS owns KMAX 31 Sacramento and KBHK 44 San Francisco, that would leave both KQCA 58 Sacramento and KBWB 20 San Francisco to go Independent? Interesting Scenarios? While Sacramento would have one true Independent again in KQCA, The Bay Area would have 3(counting KRON 4 and KICU 36).

From what I understand, the BIG money he received for KOFY TV20 was due to the comparitively high ratings the WB network was receiving then for their programming. Maybe they can hire Gabbert to program KBWB, and he can bring back the Dance Party and Barnaby Jones reruns.

KQCA should be okay -- they've got enough programming in the Hearst-Argyle arsenal to compensate for the loss of WB. One scenario: KQCA could time-shift Oprah and Dr. Phil reruns (they're already doing that at other times of the day) in prime time, leading up to their 10pm KCRA-produced-WB58-branded newshour.

KBWB has greater problems than losing WB: they're owned by Granite, which doesn't have the buying power of the larger station groups it competes against; they are in a market that isn't doing much to support its independents as it is; and they are probably ripe for a takeover by someone.

I remember that this was James Gabbert's problem when he owned TV20. He didn't have the buying power for the big syndicated programs or hot off-network sitcom repeats. Hence the "TV 20 Mystery Theatre," otherwise known as Quinn Martin 70s cop show re-runs, not to mention 3D-TV, and his other attention grabbing stunts.

NOPE NOPE NOPE.....

Granite was just not very smart and OVERPAID Gabbert for WB20.

WB WAS not receiving better ratings while Pacific FM owned channel 20.

The future of WB 20 is very bleak

I think we all yearn for the days of yesteryear when the Independents had a 8oClock Movie, or the all night Movies Til Dawn, or Cartoons in the mornings and afternoons with Capn' Mitch or even Bob Wilkins Creature Features but the sad fact is todays Independents will not be like the Independents of the 60's, 70's and 80's.I agree with the earlier poster, KQCA 58 will do fine.As for the current or future owners of KBWB 20, I feel for them. They could make money as a 24 hour Infomercial channel or All Religious? Maybe they'll pick up the Trinity Broadcasting Network? A wishful thinking proposal would have them show old classic TV shows of the 50's, 60's and 70's but with TV Land and DVDs of Classic TV Shows, it is not feasable. Just my Two Cents!
