NPR & PRX Launch Initiative To Increase Public Station Monetization For Podcasts

Here is something Public Media is doing to adapt to the times. It a system for local stations to monetize their podcasts.

NPR along with its sponsorship subsidiary NPM and PRX announced a new collaboration to enable stations to monetize their podcasts.

Starting today, NPM will provide sponsorship sales for stations’ series and shows that are hosted by PRX’s Dovetail podcast publishing and monetization platform. Podcasts from Boise State Public Radio, LAist, VPM in Virginia, WGCU in Southwest Florida, and WWNO in New Orleans are among the early adopters. The groups say that this collaboration aligns NPM’s national sales capabilities with PRX’s platform to streamline additive support for local stations nationwide.

The thing to understand about this is that public radio only has to be non-commercial on broadcast radio. Anything else they do, from podcasts to websites to internet streams, can carry commercials.

Non-profit rules are mainly for tax purposes, but we know of non-profits that also own profit-making companies. So we don't have to limit public broadcasting as one thing. Especially now that it's been freed from the rules involved with government funding, the horizons are much bigger.
