NPR temporarily stopped it's twitter accounts in a "state-media" beef with Elon Musk

In other twitter news, Musk says the old company is dead, and it's now X Corp:

Oh, well that branding change will certainly make a difference. Not.

On NPR this afternoon they reported that when NPR suspended their Twitter accounts, it resulted in their pulling about 50 accounts in total. They didn't explain how they arrived at 50 or if that number possibly included at least some individual stations.

All of the NPR shows have their own twitter sites, such as @npratc or @mprme or @nprfreshair

Then various NPR departments have their own twitter sites, such as @nprmusic, @nprbooks, @nprhealth

Then various NPR hosts have their own twitter sites, such as @nprinskeep, @nprscottsimon

AFAIK, none of the stations were labeled as 'government-funded,' even though they receive funding directly from the government, and some are even state owned. But as indicated above, some affiliated stations are joining with NPR in the protest.

It might be Local stations that joined NPR at the time of the report in response to the Elon Musk label of NPR.

Why KCRW is leaving Twitter — and where else to find us

Now KCRW Los Angeles joined in removing their Twitter feed with NPR News.

Hawaii Public Radio joins in the Boycott.

There's a bunch of local stations that have joined in and suspended their accounts. It appears one user here on Radio Discussions has started a separate discussion thread for each station that has pulled their Twitter account, listed under the city where each of those stations is located.

WBEZ, KALW, KGOU for now at least not yet ready

Once again, none of the station accounts have been labeled 'government funded,' even though all of them are, and some are even owned by state governments. Thus demonstrating the capricious labeling by the company CEO. He didn't consult with anyone, didn't do any research, just did what he felt like doing because he can.

Update this gets crazier Lauren Boebert is ranting about "Defunding NPR." First of all this affect CPB that funds some of the Smaller NPR affiliates will be affected by this. This is while some NPR affiliates have joined with NPR News and shut down their twitter feeds. Note This is subject to change. First of all its Reuters that have extensively covered some of Elon Musk's current lawsuits at Tesla over racism and privacy issues at his other company. NPR had nothing to do with anything here.

Elon Musk and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) called for NPR to be defunded after the outlet announced it would no longer use Twitter due to the social media platform slapping it with a “government-funded media” label.

“Defund @NPR,” Musk tweeted on Wednesday, after sharing an email that said the media outlet was no longer using Twitter.
Boebert responded to the Musk Tweet by saying “I’ve been saying that for quite some time! Let’s get it done!”

NPR said it decided to stop using the platform because the “government-funded media” label undermined public trust and its editorial independence.

Twitter had initially labelled NPR’s account as “state-affiliated” media, but switched to the government-funded categorization over the weekend, which it also applied to outlets including the BBC, PBS and Voice of America.

There is no line item in the federal budget for NPR. The funding goes to CPB, and they distribute federal funds to hundreds of local public radio stations. The stations use that money to buy programming from a number of places, including NPR. There is some CPB money that goes directly to NPR, but it's mainly for the satellite interconnection system, which is actually owned by the stations, not NPR. So it's a very complicated thing. It's too bad elected representatives don't understand how government works. Same with Musk. He's attacking NPR, when all of the government funding goes to local stations, none of which have been targeted by his campaign.

I swore I said the same exact stuff about "Defund PBS" and we said the same thing CPB gets the funding and gives it to fund smaller PBS affiliates. Then I had dig which local PBS affiliates, PBS Frontline, PBS Newshour were airing segments at the time of that post specifically "Trump Allies" didn't want aired with no success and we ended up with politicians ranting about Sesame Street for some reason even though that show is owned by Sesame Workshop and have a contract to stream on HBO Max.

Here with the NPR situation I had no evidence that NPR aired anything that Musk didn't want aired. I had seen mainly Reuters covering Elon Musk getting sued over incidents that happened at Tesla like allegations of racism and privacy violations.
