Nebraska NRG Usher(s) in new ownership of its Omaha cluster.

Interesting...grew up in Omaha so familiar with these stations. Don't know anything about Usher Media...must be pretty small.

Alan Usher and his family own stations in central Nebraska. He and his wife are buying NRG's stations in Kearney and Omaha independent of their family. They live in Grand Island.

So knowing a basic amount about the Usher family and their history with radio in central Nebraska.....will they keep Power 106-9 a Hip-Hop format? I only ask because sometimes if it isnt something they really as a company 'do' and even if it currently makes decent but maybe not great money I wonder if they will flip it? Just curious.

Well, going from their name knowing them they will try to play as much Usher as they possible. (I kid, of course.)

Your guess is as good as mine as to what Alan and Joanna Usher will do with the current NRG cluster in Omaha. I will, however, say that one normally wouldn't expect to see a hip-hop station in Grand Island, NE. So, no one should be surprised that it's not a format they, or their family, have done. In other words, I don't think you can read any tea leaves from what they're doing in Grand Island and Scottsbluff as they're just not Omaha and don't have similar demographics. I don't think NRG has an urban station anywhere else either.

Keep-in-mind that Omaha is roughly 10% African-American, and hip-hop tends to get an audience that's between 1/3 and 60% white. It has the numbers support an urban station if it has the business clientele willing to support it and if Usher Broadcasting will put in the work required to sell it. Hip-hop can be a tough sell, but, if it's making money for NRG, there's no reason it can't for Usher, too.

Any thoughts if they will keep Yacht Rock 1180 as is?

Worth noting that KOPW (as a Rhythmic Top 40) has beaten both Top 40/CHRs KQCH and KISO in the ratings, which is surprisingly good for a 25Kw outlet. Hopefully they’ll keep Power 106.9 around.

I worked at that Omaha group of stations (minus the 106.9) about thirty years ago, when they were owned by John Mitchell.

John started his career as a college student at KGFW Kearney, and eventually came to own that radio station along with several others across the state of Nebraska. It does seem that things are coming around full-circle (somewhat), with ownership passing to the Ushers who are based in Grand Island.

Usher Media owns KKJK 2-day fm, they play Top-40 with a mix of rap music based on their catalog . I believe they’ll keep Power 106.9 without any changes and the ratings are High in the Market right now.
