NY Radio Korea WNYZ 87.7 Back on the Air

The station, which uses the audio of a LPTV station, returned to 87.7 FM about a week ago. It had signed off on the date last July that the F.C.C. had required for low power TV stations to switch from analog to digital signals. The owner had applied for permission to provide, in addition to the digital TV signal, a separate audio service in analog, making the return as a pseudo-radio station possible. This was done by a couple of other such stations located elsewhere.
This is supposed to be a temporary authorization. Does it seem likely this will actually become permanent?

This is an experiment in the FCC giving the broadcasters their own way, which is rare. Because of that, the stations have to prove their analog existence is supported by the public, and they have to not mess up at any point along the way. The decision to allow this is not what the NAB wanted, and the NAB is down the FCC's necks frequently as if the former is some sort of radio advocacy authority (which they are not, it's a ploy to further their own interests; "We are Broadcasters" yeah, right ).
So the big picture is these stations have a chance, but the NAB has a noose on the FCC, and the FCC on these stations, and if these new assignments interfere, than it gets dropped.

Personally, I hope these new Analog FM/ATSC 3.0 assignments succeed because they are still serving a part of their population that would otherwise have troubles finding a new way to connect, and it's extra space as well, and a dual purpose. I remember someone commenting on here that they would listen to WPVI (NewsChannel 6) in nearby Philadelphia whilst they were driving.

Full-power TV stations on channel 6 used to advertise that you could listen to them on your car radio on 87.7 FM.

When i managed a station in east central Florida, we had standing permission from then analog WKMG Ch. 6 Orlando to simulcast them for any breaking news or weather coverage we wanted. Why? EVen though i was along the space coast, with an outdoor antenna, i got rock solid audio on 87.75!

When they did space shuttle launch coverage, for a day or two before hand and they day of theyd end the newscast by saying "if youre in your car or out walking around, you can listen to space shuttle coverage across central florida on 87.7 FM and along the space coast on AM 1300"

Venture Technologies, which operates stations on 87.7 in Chicago IL and San Jose, CA has asked the FCC for permission to continue these broadcasts. The 6 months the FCC granted for the hybrid digital TV/FM audio broadcasts to be on the air will be ending soon.
Venture states that they had reached out to other broadcasters that may be impacted by their FM transmissions on 87.7, and have not received any interference complaints. This could naturally help Radio Korea WNYZ-LP remain on the air on 87.7 in New York.
87.7 Radio Broadcasts to Remain?
