From the New York Times:

Anita and Sheldon Drobny, two of the founders of Air America Radio, are taking the next step to ensure that liberal programming stays on the air: obtaining radio stations. Anita and Sheldon Drobny want to spread liberal talk radio by buying stations across the country. The couple has announced plans to begin buying or leasing radio stations across the United States through their new company, Nova M Radio ... read more - NY Times

Once again, too little, too late. The Drobnys should have done this 10 to 15 years ago, like Salem did. All the good radio real estate is taken. This rich tax accountant seem to think if you build it, they will come. Doesn't matter if you get a rim-shot class IV AM that does not reach most of the geographic market area. Doesn't matter if you don't do promotion. Just get a stick - any stick - and plug into the AAR satellite feed all day and get Arbitron shares to the right of the decimal point.
Second, these people have already demonstrated their profound ineptitude in the radio business. What in their management track-record with Air America Radio suggests an ability to run a group of stations? There is a reason why most station managers come from sales - not from accounting, investing or medicine.
Third, they've gotten involved with "Doctor" Mike Newcomb. What is it about these arrogant grade-grubbers who get into medical schools that calls them to wave their MDs in people's faces in contexts that have nothing to do with the practice of medicine? These over-paid body mechanics, who go through life getting their butts kissed by gullible patients, office flunkies and drug reps, start to delude themselves they know everything and can do everything. Listen to how uninformed some of them are when they start talking about diet and exercise - and that's actually related to what they are supposed to be doing. Newcomb tried to run for governor. How can one of these jerks think they can a government when they can't even manage a private practice? Newcomb is supposed to do a show from 6 to 9 am. I can picture from 6 am to 7:15 they will actually run a loop saying, "Doctor had an emergency and is running late this morning. Please wait." Maybe they will have a stack of old magazines for the board op to read on the air until "doctor" shows up. (Same applies to Dean, Frist and any others that don't come immediately to mind).
